Congratulations to the Charlton County Indian baseball team for advancing to the Final Four of the GHSA Class A Division II Playoffs. The Indians will travel to Twin City to face Emanuel County Institute on Thursday hoping to advance to the championship series.
Speaking of baseball congratulations to Indian senior Slade Oxley for his signing to play college baseball at Union Commonwealth University in Kentucky.
Also, Maiden basketball standout Christiona Farmer announced she has committed to play college basketball at Thomas University in Thomasville. An official signing date hasn’t yet been announced.
Courtney Williams and the Minnesota Lynx lost a heartbreaking game to open the WNBA regular season on Saturday. The Lynx fell 91-90 to the Atlanta Dream. Williams scored fourteen points, had six rebounds and four assists in the game.
The Atlanta Braves hit their first slump of the season losing their first series of the year. They dropped two of three to the Seattle Mariners but rebounded to take two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road. The Braves are now 28-13 and lead the National League East by nine games.
It was a tough week off the field for the Braves as long-time owner Ted Turner who put the Braves on national television passed away at the age of 87 and then long-time manager Bobby Cox died at the age of 84. Cox led the Braves to fourteen straight division titles and the 1995 World Series. He won 2504 games in his career which is fourth all time.
In the NBA conference semifinals, the Oklahoma City Thunder hold a 3-0 lead over the Los Angeles Lakers in one Western Conference semifinal while the San Antonio Spurs hold a 2-1 lead over the Minnesota Timberwolves. In the Eastern Conference the New York Knicks lead 3-0 against the Philadelphia 76er’s and the Detroit Pistons hold a 2-1 advantage over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In college baseball the Georgia Bulldogs won the SEC regular season championship over the weekend. It’s the first time since 2006 for the Dawgs to accomplish that feat.
On the other diamond the Georgia softball team knocked off top ranked Oklahoma in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament but fell in the next round to Texas.
The Jacksonville Sharks ran their winning streak to four games winning after they knocked off the Tulsa Oilers 41-34 to improve their record to 5-1 on the year.
On the PGA Tour at the Truist Championship in Charlotte a tight battle in the final round ensued but, in the end, it would be Kristoffer Reitan pulling away late to win by two strokes and claim his first ever PGA Tour win.
The NASCAR Cup Series race was held at Watkins Glen and Shane van Gisbergen took the lead with six laps remaining and cruised to an easy win. He finished over seven seconds ahead of his nearest challenger Michael McDowell. The win is his first of the year and seventh in his career.
