The Charlton County Baseball Team picked up five wins last week including two no-hitters against Turner County along with walk off wins against West Nassau and Clinch County. They wrapped up the week with a win against Clinch in which they had to hold on to claim the victory. Charlton is now 19-5 overall and 15-2 in Region 2-A action.
The week started out at home on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Turner County. The Tribe struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Griffin Thomas led off with a double and would later score on a sacrifice fly by Ethan Crawford.
Turner tied it up in the top of the second using three walks and an Indian error to score. But Charlton took the lead for good in the second when a bases loaded error by the Titans allowed three Indians to score.
The score stayed 4-1 until the fourth when Brantley Nettles led off with a solo home run. Singles by Colton Beard and Brodie Baker followed by an error and a double by Jakob Thigpen made it. A sacrifice fly by Crawford added to the lead before a passed ball and a wild pitch plated two more Indians making it 10-1.
The game ended in the top of the fifth when Colton Beard was hit by a pitch and courtesy runner Noah Jackson stole second and went to third on an error. An RBI ground out by Tyson Lloyd made it 11-1 and the game was called.
Crawford, Thigpen and Tyson combined to no-hit the Titans while striking out ten batters. Thomas led the offense with two hits while Crawford drove in a pair of runs.
The second game was much of the same with the Tribe scoring twice in the first inning. A balk scored the first run and Bentley Beard singled home Grant Harris making it 2-0.
In the second inning the Indians got RBI hits by Thomas and Crawford before another balk plated the fifth Indian run.
The fourth inning saw Charlton score on a sacrifice fly by Harris, a steal of home by Crawford, an RBI single by Bentley Beard and on a wild pitch pushing the lead to 9-0.
The Indians ended things early again in the fifth when Turner hit four straight batters to force home a run making the final 10-0.
Baker and Bentley Beard combined to allow no runs on no hits while striking out nine batters. Beard also led the offense with two hits and two RBIs.
On Wednesday the Indians had a non-region game against West Nassau at home. The Tribe grabbed the early lead when Thomas led off with a double. Crawford sacrificed him to third and an error on the play allowed Thomas to score.
The Warriors tied it in the bottom of the second with a solo home run and it stayed that way until the fourth when West Nassau took a one run lead.
The Indians couldn’t push anyone across the plate until they came up in the bottom of the seventh. Thigpen led off with a single, stole second and scored on a hit by Baker tying the score at 2-2. Baker was retired on the base paths leading up to Crawford coming up with two outs. A line drive to left got by the diving outfielder and rolled to the fence allowing Crawford to circle the bases for an inside the park walk off home run.
Crawford and Nettles combined to allow four hits and one earned run while striking out six batters. Six batters picked up one hit each for the Indians.
On Thursday they hosted Clinch County in a key region contest. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. Harris led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Thigpen for a 1-0 lead. In the sixth the Indians added to their lead. Slade Oxley singled and Thigpen walked and with two outs a Pather error allowed the second Indian run to score.
But in the top of the seventh Clinch scored twice to tie the score heading to the bottom of the seventh. Crawford led off with a fly ball that was misplayed allowing him to reach second. Bentley Beard was hit by a pitch and Harris walked to load the bases. Then a wild pitch allowed Crawford to score the winning run from third for a 3-2 win.
Thomas went the distance on the mound allowing just two hits and one earned run. The Tribe took advantage of the four hits they had along with five walks and two hit batters.
On Friday they headed over to Homerville for a rematch against Clinch. As they had done all week the Indians jumped out on top first. An error scored the first run and Baker singled home another for a 2-0 lead after two innings.
In the third inning Thigpen singled home Crawford pushing the lead to 3-0. Clinch got on the board in the bottom of the third to cut the lead down to two.
But Charlton answered back in the fourth. Grant Lawrence was hit by a pitch, Thomas singled and Crawford walked to load the bases. With two outs Grant Harris delivered a two-run double to push the lead to 5-1.
Clinch added one run in the bottom of the fourth before the Indians got that run back in the sixth. Crawford led off with a double and Nettles beat out a bunt single. Harris came through with an RBI single making it 6-2.
The Tribe got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth, but the Panthers did their best to rally in the seventh. They scored twice making it 6-4 but with two runners on Baker struck out the final batter to preserve the win.
Harris led the Tribe with three hits and three RBI’s while Baker added a pair of RBIs. Harris also picked up the win on the mound and got good relief from Slade Oxley and Baker to finish the game.
While everyone is on spring break the Indians were in action on Monday at McIntosh County Academy, Tuesday at Brooks County and home against Atkinson County on Wednesday. They will wrap up the regular season next week hosting McIntosh on Tuesday before a home doubleheader against Irwin County on Friday.
