The 1995, 2005 and 2006 Charlton County Boys Track and Field State Champions were honored this past Saturday during the basketball game at the high school. Many of the past greats or those representing them were in attendance. Afterwards they met in the school cafeteria to relive old memories. Also, video messages from previous coaches were shown since they were not able to attend.
The 1995 team under the direction of Jim Culpepper got first place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters from Narada Gibbs while Jobe Hannan took the top spot in both the long jump and triple jump as well as a second place in the 300 hurdles. Champ Bailey took top honors in the high jump while the 4×100 relay team of Champ Bailey, Gibbs, John Canaday and Hannans also took the gold. The 4×400 relay team of Sacret Jordan, Antwon Nixon, Champ Bailey and Hannan placed first as well. Nixon also took home a second place in the 800-meter run while Chris Walker placed second in both the high jump and triple jump. Rounding out the scoring was Boss Bailey placing fourth in the 110 hurdles. The collective effort of these individuals allowed the Road Warriors to easily outdistance second place Landmark Christian 104-65 to claim the first state championship in school history.
In 2005 the Road Warriors were back at it again. Under the direction of Scott Brock, they would beat out second place Grady 72-38. David Pender picked up first place finishes in the 100 meters as well as the long jump and triple jump while Justin Williams took top honors in both the 200 and 400 meters. The 4×100 relay team including alternates of Tony Glover, Williams, Devaughn Whitley, Antonio Edwards and Edward Thompson took first place honors. Glover would place second behind Pender in the 200 meters and the 4×400 relay team of Harry Martin, Williams, Whitley and D.J. Donley placed fourth.
Looking to repeat in 2006 the Road Warriors found the going a little tougher. Needing to win the 4×400 relay in the final race the squad of Justin Williams, David Pender, Jonathan Ferguson, D.J. Donley as well as alternates Antoine Brown and Brian Paisley pulled out the win to give Charlton a 75.25-71 win over Greater Atlanta Christian. Pender once again led the Road Warriors with wins in the 100 meters, long jump and the triple jump while the 4×100 relay team of Glover, Dwight Dasher, Pender and Williams claimed the top prize as well. Adam Davis placed second in the discus while Williams took third place in both the 200- and 400-meter runs. Glover took fourth in the 100 meters to wrap up the scoring as Charlton went back-to-back.
