The Charlton County Indians advanced to the second round of the GHSA Class A Division II playoffs after a convincing 35-7 win over Macon County in Montezuma. The Tribe will travel to Sylvania this Friday night to face Screven County.
Former Indian Maurice Sims rushed for fifteen yards on three carries in Tennessee Tech’s loss to Kentucky last Saturday. It was the first loss of the season for Tennessee Tech.
The fifth ranked Georgia Bulldogs exploded for twenty one fourth quarter points to pull away from tenth ranked Texas and improve to 9-1 on the season after their 35-10 win. The loss was the third of the season for the preseason number one ranked team.
Third ranked Texas A&M avoided a major upset after coming from behind after trailing South Carolina 30-3 at the half to win 31-30. Fourth ranked Alabama wasn’t quite as fortunate as they lost to Oklahoma 23-21 in the only upset among top ten teams.
Meanwhile the Florida Gators fell to 3-7 after falling to Ole Miss 34-24. The loss eliminated the Gators from any postseason bowl game.
The Jacksonville Jaguars bounced back from their collapse last week and totally dominated the Los Angeles Chargers 36-6 to improve to 6-4 on the season.
Earlier in the week it was announced that first round draft pick Travis Hunter would be lost for the remainder of the season after knee surgery.
The Atlanta Falcons fell to 3-7 on the year after losing to the Carolina Panthers 27-24 in overtime. Quarterback Michael Penix, Jr. was injured during the game and did not return to action.
Major league baseball announced their awards last week. Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani won his third consecutive Most Valuable Player Award for the National League. New York Yankee star Aaron Judge claimed his second straight MVP in the American League. The Cy Young Awards went to Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes while Tarik Skubal claimed his second straight for the Detroit Tigers. The Rookie of the Year Awards went to the Oakland A’s Nick Kurtz while one of the few bright spots for the Atlanta Braves Drake Baldwin claimed the National League award.
In college hoops several of the bottom top ten went down last week. Seventh ranked BYU lost to third ranked Connecticut and eighth ranked Alabama fell to second ranked Purdue. Ninth ranked Kentucky dropped their game against Louisville.
In women’s hoops only one top ten lost as sixth ranked Oklahoma fell to third ranked UCLA.
In the NBA the Atlanta Hawks improved to 8-5 after winning three straight on a West Coast road trip. The Hawks knocked off the Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings and the Utah Jazz and are tied for the fourth best record in the Eastern Conference.
Leading the way in the Eastern Conference are the Detroit Pistons with an 11-2 record while the Oklahoma City Thunder lead the Western Conference with a 13-1
record.
