Indians Battle Hard But Fall To Brooks 39-21 – By Glenn Hughes
The Charlton County Indians made the long trek to Brooks County last Friday night with a chance to grab the second seed out of the region for the playoffs. The Tribe started quick and led in the third quarter but eventually would succumb to the fifth ranked Trojans.
The tribe received the opening kickoff and on the second play from scrimmage Omari Wilson broke free for a fifty nine yard run down to the nine yard line. But four plays netted eight yards and the Trojans took over on downs from their own one yard line. On their second play a mishandled snap was fumbled out of the end zone for a safety giving Charlton an early 2-0 lead.
Charlton returned the kickoff back across midfield but two penalties pushed them back. Quarterback A.J. Glover ran for thirteen yards before hitting Trevan Cobb for nine yards and a first down. Runs by Wilson and Elijah Bryant along with a pass interference penalty gave the Indians a first and goal from the seven yard line. After Wilson picked up two yards Glover found Cobb in the end zone for a touchdown. The PAT kick failed and the Indian lead was 8-0 with 4:20 left in the opening quarter.
But Brooks came roaring back returning the kickoff fifty yards down to the Indian twenty three. After a penalty on the Indians Brooks completed an eleven yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good and the Indian lead was down to 8-7.
Not to be deterred the Indians recovered an onside kick attempt just past midfield and two plays later Wilson busted another long run scoring from forty four yards out. Tray Jones kicked the PAT and at the 2:53 mark of the first quarter the Indians led 15-7.
The two teams would trade punts and Brooks took over from their own forty. On the first play they ran for fifty yards down to the ten. A penalty and a sack by Bryant forced the Trojans to kick a thirty nine yard field goal making it 15-10 with9:39 left in the half.
After the kickoff the Indians picked up one first down but had to punt giving Brooks the ball at their own thirty. The Trojans would use ten plays and run almost six minutes off the clock scoring on a five yard run with just 0:45 left before halftime. The two point pass was good and Brooks went into the half with a 18-15 lead.
The Trojans got the second half kickoff but couldn’t move the ball and punted. Passes to Cobb, Wilson and Jack Mobley pushed the ball down to the twenty four. From their Glover connected with Khalil Smith for a touchdown giving the Indians a 21-18 lead after the PAT was blocked.
But Brooks answered back driving sixty one yards on eight plays scoring on a one yard run with 2:37 left in the third quarter for a 25-21 lead.
After a series of punts the Trojans got the ball back with 8:35 remaining from their own thirty six. One run picked up twenty five yards and on the next play they ran it into the end zone from thirty nine yards out to go up 32-21 with 7:29 remaining.
The Indians would drive down to the twenty eight but two sacks and a lost fumble gave the ball back to Brooks. On the second play of the drive Brooks ran for a forty seven yard touchdown and with the PAT kick took a 39-21 lead. Neither team threatened again and the Indians suffered a hard fought loss.
The Indians will be back on the road again this Friday for the regular season finale at Turner County. A Charlton win gives the Indians the third seed while a Turner win would create a three way tie for the last two playoff seeds.
