The 2025 Indian football season gets underway this Friday night in Nahunta against Brantley County. Make plans to get out and support these kids. The Indians are looking to improve on their 5-6 record from a year ago.
The Maiden softball team had a tough week last week dropping games to Pierce County and Brunswick to even their record at 2-2. Brunswick made the return trip to Folkston on Monday before heading to Atkinson County on Tuesday. On Thursday they will host Lanier County and are scheduled to travel to Vidalia on Saturday.
The Bethune Braves football team will open their season up this Wednesday when they face Pierce County in Blackshear while the Bethune Maidens will also travel to Pierce County on Monday for their season opener.
Former Maiden star Courtney Williams and her Minnesota Lynx teammates rattled off three more wins last week despite not having possible MVP candidate Napheesa Collier due to an ankle sprain. Williams scored forty eight points, grabbed eleven rebounds and dished out sixteen assists to help the Lynx improve to 26-5 on the year.
The Jacksonville Jaguars had their first preseason game last Saturday. Many starters played just one series including quarterback Trevor Lawrence as the Jaguars fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25. The highlight of the night was kicker Cam Little blasting a seventy yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
Meanwhile the Atlanta Falcons fell to the Detroit Lions 17-10 as starting quarterback Michael Penix did not play. The game was called with just over six minutes remaining due to an injury to a Lions player that required major medical attention.
The Atlanta Braves dropped three straight to the Milwaukee Brewers before rebounding to take four of five from the Miami Marlins. While the playoffs are all but out of the question it’s good to see the 51-67 Braves continue to push forward.
College football gets underway for some schools this weekend but the majority of teams will start next weekend including Georgia hosting Marshall and Florida playing Long Island University. The big games of the week are Ohio State and Texas battling it out while Alabama and Florida State play as well.
The preseason Coaches Poll was released last week with Texas coming in at number one followed by Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia and Notre Dame.
On the PGA Tour at the St. Judes Championship in Memphis Justin Rose beat J.J. Spaun on the third playoff hole to win his twelfth career PGA tournament.
At the Watkins Glen Road Course it was Shane van Ginsbergen winning his fourth race of the year by a comfortable distance. Christopher Bell finished second but he was over eleven seconds behind the leader.
