The Charlton County Maiden softball team got off to a good start last week after routing McIntosh County Academy and then coming from behind to defeat Worth County.
The Charlton County football team had their scrimmage last Friday night against Berrien. The final scoreboard showed the Rebels edging the Tribe 13-12 but the main purpose was to determine what improvements need to be made. The Indians will have two weeks to work out the kinks before traveling to Nahunta on August 15 to face Brantley County in the season opener.
Bethune Middle School football opens up on August 13 at Pierce County while the softball squad also open at Pierce County on August 18.
Courtney Williams and the Minnesota Lynx picked up two more wins last week beating the defending champion New York Liberty before setting a new WNBA record for the largest margin of victory in a road game against the Las Vegas Aces. Williams scored fifteen points, grabbed fifteen rebounds and dealt out twenty two assists including a career high thirteen against New York.
There will be several former Indian athletes on the sidelines in college football this season. Jaylen King will be at Florida State after transferring from East Tennessee State. Jamie Jackson returns for his redshirt freshman season at Reinhardt University while freshman Maurice Sims will be making his college debut at Tennessee Tech University. Also, Elyiss Williams who played his first two high school seasons with the Indians will be a freshman at the University of Georgia.
With their entire opening day five man starting pitcher roster on the injured list and not expected to return soon the Atlanta Braves are just trying to salvage what’s left of this disappointing season. The Braves dropped two of three to the Kansas City Royals before coming back to win two of three against the Cincinnati Reds including Sunday’s win in a game played at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee.
Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg passed away last week at the age of sixty five. Sandberg was a mainstay in the lineup for many years for the Chicago Cubs.
The Jacksonville Sharks saw their season come to a close after a first round playoff loss to the Quad City Steamwheelers.
Meanwhile the Jacksonville Jaguars are preparing for their first preseason game on Saturday when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers at home. Anticipation is high with the new coaching staff along with the addition of two way player Travis Hunter.
At the Wyndham Championship Cameron Young entered the final day with a five stroke lead, bumped it up to nine before eventually winning his first PGA Tour win with a six stroke victory.
At the Iowa Speedway William Byron held off Chase Briscoe and a nearly empty gas tank to pick up his fifteenth career NASCAR Cup Series win.
