The wait is finally over as the Maidens and Indians return to action this week. The Maidens will scrimmage at home against Brantley County on Wednesday. They will then face McIntosh County Academy at home on Friday before heading to Adel Saturday to face both Cook and Worth County. The Indians will take the field for a preseason scrimmage on Friday against Berrien at Champ Bailey Field.
Bethune Middle School football opens up on August 13 at Pierce County while the softball squad also open at Pierce County on August 18.
The Little Indian Football Camp was held on Saturday with about twenty future Indians braving the heat to learn the skills of the game.
The alumni basketball games pitting Charlton County against Hilliard were a success at the annual Back Pack Bash on Saturday at the high school. Hilliard alumni claimed the women’s game while Charlton came out on top in the men’s game. Lanesha Smith and Zuryan Washington were named MVP’s for the Charlton County teams
Courtney Williams and the Minnesota Lynx continued to roll on after the All Star break picking up wins over the Chicago Sky and Las Vegas Aces. Williams scored thirty three points and handed out twelve assists in the two wins. The Lynx are now 22-4 on the season.
Making the playoffs is becoming a long shot for the Atlanta Braves. They dropped two of three to the San Francisco Giants and were swept in three games by the Texas Rangers. They are currently four in the National League East and sixteen games out of first place with a 44-60 record.
Baseball history was made last week by the Oakland A’s Nick Kurtz. He became the first rookie in Major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in one game and just the twentieth player overall.
The Jacksonville Sharks won their regular season finale 63-53 over the Green Bay Blizzard to finish the Indoor Football League schedule at 10-6. The Sharks enter the playoffs as the fourth seed in the Eastern Division and will play the top seeded Quad City Steamwheelers in the opening round.
The PGA Tour returned stateside with the 3M Open in Minnesota. Kurt Kitayama beat Scott Stevens by one stroke to pick up his second career PGA Tour win.
The NASCAR Cup Series took to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400. Bubba Wallace held off Kyle Larson in overtime for his first win of the season and earned
his way into the playoffs.
