Congratulations to new Indians head football coach Brandon Byram. Byram comes to Charlton County from Taylor County and will be the 22nd head coach in Charlton County history dating back to 1947.
Also, congratulations to senior Maiden basketball player Christiona Farmer for being selected to the Class A Division II All State Team.
Senior Indian football player Tray Jones has committed to play college football at Eureka College in Illinois.
The Charlton County girls track team placed second over the weekend at the BSN Sports Small School Championships in Quitman on Saturday. They were first among Class A Division II schools. The boys placed second among Class A Division II schools there.
The Charlton County baseball team shutout Brooks County and Atkinson County before being shutout themselves against Citizen’s Christian Academy.
Former Maiden track star Kiara Green of Brewton Parker College placed sixth in the 100 meters and helped her 4×100 relay team to a second-place finish at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach. The meet was the first of the outdoor track season.
Natalie Thompson scored her second goal of the season for the Truett McConnell lacrosse team.
Ian Vickers picked up his third win of the year after beating nationally ranked ABAC. Vickers pitched seven innings and gave up just two runs while striking out seven batters.
March Madness got underway with a little chaos as High Point knocked off fifth seeded Wisconsin. Sixth seed North Carolina also fell victim, losing to Virginia Commonwealth. Top ranked Duke was in a battle but managed to hold on and beat Siena. Four of the top sixteen seeds fell as Gonzaga fell to Texas and Kansas lost to St. John’s. Defending national champion Florida fell to Iowa on a late basket while Virginia lost to Tennessee.
In women’s hoops the madness was not there with no major upsets and the top teams moving to the Sweet Sixteen through Sunday.
The Atlanta Hawks had their eleven-game winning streak snapped but bounced back the next game with a win. They have moved into the division lead by a half game and currently hold the sixth seed in the Eastern Division.
At the NASCAR Cup race from the Darlington Raceway Tyler Reddick won for the fourth time in six races so far this season. Reddick pulled away from the field and won by over five seconds over Brad Keselowski.
Matt Fitzpatrick overcame his loss the previous week to win the Valspar Championships. Fitzgerald birdied the final hole to win by one stroke over David Lipsky.
