The Charlton County baseball team split a pair of games last Saturday falling to Brantley County before bouncing back to defeat Hilliard. The Indians had two region games canceled earlier in the week, and the rust showed early on.
In the opener against Brantley the Herons scored two runs in the top of the first but the Indians tied it up in their half of the inning. Griffin Thomas singled and Ethan Crawford followed with a two-run home run to knot the score.
The Herons would come back with five more runs in the second and the score remained 7-2 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Bentley Beard walked and Slade Oxley hit a two-run homer to make it 7-4. Thomas then singled, stole second and third before scoring on an error.
Brantley added another run in the top of the seventh and the Tribe couldn’t score any more as they fell 8-5.
In the second game the Indians once again started off slow as they trailed the Flashes of Hilliard 4-0 going to the bottom of the third inning. Grant Lawrence led off with a double and a single by Thomas put two runners on. Crawford followed with a double that scored both. Bentley Beard then reached on an error that allowed Crawford to cut the deficit to 4-3.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Tribe added six runs to the scoreboard. Crawford was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Grant Harris then walked and stole second. Gabe Huling reached on a throwing error that scored one run. Colton Beard was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Then back-to-back walks to Oxley and Brodie Baker scored two more. Lawrence followed with a sacrifice fly before Thomas singled home two more runners making it 9-4.
Three more Indians crossed the plate in the sixth when Noah Jackson walked and Bentley Beard reached on an error. Colton Beard then doubled both runners home before an error allowed the final run in. The Flashes were kept off the board in the seventh and the Tribe was victorious 12-4.
