The Charlton County Indians cleared several hurdles Friday night in their 35-7 first round playoff win against Macon County. The Tribe advances to the second round for the first time since 2022 and ended Macon County’s seven game winning streak against the Indians. The Tribe last defeated the Bulldogs way back in 1964 for their lone win in the series prior to Friday night. Charlton will now travel to Screven County in Sylvania for the second round this Friday night.
The Indians got things rolling early on the opening drive of the game. Starting from their own twenty seven yard line the Tribe drove seventy three yards on six plays. Brandon Woolard caught a thirty seven yard pass from A.J. Glover to get into Bulldog territory and the two teamed up again for a nineteen yard touchdown pass to cap off the drive. Tray Jones kicked the PAT and at the 8:42 mark of the opening quarter the Indians led 7-0.
Macon would take over after the kickoff and complete a forty nine yard pass and follow it up with a twenty yard run down to the nine yard line. After an Indian penalty moved the ball to the four on fourth and goal the defense stepped up and held the Bulldogs at the one yard line.
Charlton moved the ball out from the shadows of their goal line to near midfield but a high snap led to a lost fumble with Macon taking over from the Indian thirty six. But the Indian defense held up after a sack by Jordan Robinson and forced a punt.
The Indians also had to punt after taking over and the Bulldogs started from their own fifteen and took nine plays to drive the field and score on a fifteen yard pass. The PAT was good and the score was tied at 7-7 with 7:12 left in the half.
The Indians would get a good return on the kickoff by Woolard and begin a slow methodical drive. Behind the running of Omari Wilson and Elijah Bryant the Indians would reach the four yard line from where Wilson crossed the goal line with just 0:45 seconds left in the half. Glover connected with Khalil Smith for the two point conversion as the Tribe entered halftime with a 15-7 lead.
Macon opened up the second half with the ball but a sack by Aiden Glover forced a Bulldog punt. Behind Wilson and Bryant along with passes to Smith and Trevan Cobb the Indians reached the twenty yard line. Bryant broke free up the middle but fumbled the ball forward into the end zone where Tray Jones recovered it for an Indian touchdown. Jones kicked the PAT and the Indian lead grew to 22-7.
The Indian defense continued to perform well as they forced another Bulldog punt and this time Javion Lambert broke free and blocked the punt straight up in the air. Woolard caught the ball and raced down to the two yard line. From there Woolard ran it in and the Indian lead was now 28-7 after the PAT was missed with 2:13 left in the third quarter.
Macon moved the ball into Indian Territory but on fourth and two from the thirty two the Tribe stuffed the fourth down run and took over on downs with 11:03 left in the game.
Eleven straight running plays between Wilson and Bryant moved the ball downfield to the seven yard line. On fourth down Glover was pressured but escaped the rush and found Smith open in the end zone. Jones kicked the PAT for a 35-7 lead with just three minutes remaining.
Against mainly reserves the Bulldogs would drive down to the four yard line but a fumble on the final play led to a ten yard loss as the Indians celebrated a 35-7 first round win.
Glover tossed two touchdown passes while Woolard ran for one score and caught another. Wilson led the Tribe with 134 yards rushing with Bryant adding sixty eight more. The Indian defense recorded sacks by Robinson, Aiden Glover and Hunter Spradley while constantly putting pressure on the Bulldog quarterback.
