After a week off the Charlton County Indian football team returned to action last Friday night and evened their record at 3-3 with a 48-20 win over Lanier County. The Tribe took advantage of three Bulldog turnovers while Omari Wilson scored four times to lead the way.
The Indians kicked off to start the game and the squib kick was mishandled by Lanier and Javion Lambert pounced on the loose football. Starting with great field position from the Lanier thirty eight Wilson ran twice for thirteen yards before Elijah Bryant added seventeen more on two carries down to the eight yard line. After an offside penalty moved the ball to the four Wilson carried it to the one yard line. From there Brandon Woolard scored from one yard out with just over three minutes gone off the clock. A mishandled snap on the PAT led to the holder being tackled and the Indians led 6-0.
Lanier would then take the kickoff and drive sixty four yards on nine plays and score on a one yard run. The PAT was good and the Bulldogs took the lead 7-6 at the 5:22 mark of the first quarter.
Charlton would get great field position again after a late hit on a fair catch on the kickoff. Starting from the Lanier forty one Wilson ran for eighteen yards before passes from A.J. Glover to Woolard and Trevan Cobb moved the ball to the four yard line. Wilson would run it in from there and after the two point conversion failed the Indians led 12-7 with 3:54 left in the opening quarter.
Both teams would force punts and the Bulldogs took possession and on second and twenty Khalil Smith picked off an errant Bulldog pass and raced thirty five yards to paydirt. Wilson ran in the two point conversion and the lead grew to 20-7 with three seconds left in the quarter.
Lanier ould turn the ball over again on their next possession with Woolard making the interception at the Indian forty six. Penalties on both sides moved the ball back and forth and the Tribe faced a first and fifteen from their own forty one. Wilson ran for six and Glover connected with Woolard for eighteen more. Wilson followed with a ten yard run and Bryant added ten more on two carries down to the five yard line. Wilson capped the drive off from there with a five yard run. The two point try failed and the Indians led 26-7 with 8:25 left in the half.
But Lanier didn’t roll over as they went seventy six yards on just five plays scoring on a seventeen yard run. The extra point was good and the Indian lead was cut to 26-14 with 6:23 left in the half.
Neither team threatened the remainder of the half and the Tribe went to the locker room with a twelve point lead. At halftime Ashiya Harvey was crowned the Homecoming Queen.
The Indians received the second half kickoff and started from their own thirty nine. A Glover to Smith pass covered nine yards before Wilson rumbled for fifteen more down to the thirty seven. The very next play Wilson completed the scoring drive running it in from thirty seven yards. Austin Paulk kicked the PAT and with just fifty seven gone off the second half clock the Indian lead grew to 33-14.
Lanier was forced to punt and the Tribe drove down to the twenty seven but turned the ball over on downs. Lanier would then take five plays to drive seventy three yards scoring on a fifty six yard pass play. The PAT kick missed and Charlton’s lead was cut to 33-20 with 3:31 left in the third quarter.
Charlton wasted no time getting back on the board. Starting from the their own thirty five Wilson ran twice out to midfield. Bryant then rambled thirty five yards before scoring from fifteen yards out. Glover connected with Cobb for the two point conversion and with 1:42 left in the third quarter the lead was 41-20.
The Indian defense forced a punt and the Tribe started from their own twenty. Charlton moved methodically down the field behind the running of Wilson, Bryant and Glover down to the twenty yard line. From there Glover hit Wilson on a swing pass out of the backfield and Wilson took the ball to the end zone for his fourth score of the night. Paulk kicked the PAT and with 8:48 left in the game Charlton led 48-20.
Lanier moved the ball out to midfield where they tried a fake punt but Greyson Westerbeck sniffed it out and made the tackle for no gain. From there the Indians were able to run out the remaining 7:38 and win 48-20 to go 1-0 after the opening region game.
The Indians rushed for 293 yards in the game with Wilson picking up 159 yards and Bryant clipping the century mark as well with 114 yards. Glover passed for 106 yards distributing ten completions among five different receivers.
