Mrs. Sallie Chatman Celebrates 107 Years – By Kelvin Henderson

Mrs. Sallie Chatman, the oldest living resident of Charlton County, celebrated her 107th birthday on June24, marking an extraordinary milestone that few people ever reach. Born in 1919, Chatman has lived through more than a century of history, witnessing dramatic changes in her community, the nation, and the world. Her longevity has made her a beloved figure in Charlton County and an inspiration to family, friends, and neighbors. Chatman completed the highest grade offered by the African American school she attended during her childhood. In 1938, she married the late Samuel R. Chatman, a decorated World War II veteran and educator. Together, they raised four children: Claudette Smith (deceased), James Chatman, Yvonne Ragsdale, and Dwight Chatman (deceased). Throughout her life, Chatman devoted herself to her family as a homemaker while also working as a cook and seamstress for many years. She remained active in both her community and her church and continues to be a member of Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Today, Chatman lives at home with her daughter, Yvonne. She enjoys reading the comics in the newspaper, solving puzzles, and watching Westerns on television. A birthday celebration had been planned in honor of Chatman’s 107th birthday, but the gathering was postponed as she continues to recover from an illness. Family members remain hopeful that the celebration can beheld once her health improves, allowing loved ones to gather and recognize the remarkable milestone together. Reaching the age of 107 is an exceptionally rare achievement. Only a small number of people worldwide live beyond their 100th birthday, making Chatman’s accomplishment especially noteworthy. Although this year’s celebration was delayed, family and friends continue to keep Chatman in their thoughts and prayers as she recovers. They look forward to celebrating her remarkable life and journey when she is feeling well enough to enjoy the occasion. Her 107th birthday serves as a reminder of a life defined by faith, family, service, and resilience. Through more than a century of experiences, Mrs. Sallie Chatman has left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations throughout Charlton County.
