The Charlton County Indians did what you’re supposed to do against a lesser opponent Thursday night at Champ Bailey Field. The game was moved up due to the threat of bad weather, but the early start didn’t affect the Tribe as they cruised to a 48-0 win over the winless Atkinson County Rebels. With the win the Indians improve to 5-1-1 on the season and 2-0 in Region 2-A. The Rebels received the opening kickoff, but the Tribe forced a punt and took over just across midfield at the forty-eight. A short one-yard pass was followed by Elijah Bryant running forty-seven yards to paydirt and the early lead. Noah Restrepo kicked the PAT and with just over four minutes into the game the Indians led 7-0. Charlton would force another punt, and Bryant would pick up eleven yards on first down to the thirty-one. Penalties on both teams would move the ball back and forth before A.J. Glover passed to Jack Mobley for nineteen yards down to the two-yard line. Glover would run it in from there and after Restrepo’s PAT the lead was 14-0 with 2:31 left in the opening quarter. The defense would hold firm and highlighted by a sack from Kashawn Cobb they would force another punt. A facemask penalty gave Charlton the ball at the Rebel forty-two. On the final play of the first quarter Glover found Quincy Wilson open for a forty-two-yard touchdown pass. A bobbled snap on the PAT led to a failed pass for two punts and the lead had grown to 20-0. Atkinson was able to pick up a couple of first downs but had to punt the ball away once again. The Tribe would take over from their own fifteen-yard line. A pass to Tyler Kidd and two runs by Ty Harris totaled twenty-seven yards out to the Rebel forty-eight. Glover would connect with Wilson once again for the score with 4:47 left in the half. Restrepo’s PAT made it 27-0. The Rebels then moved the ball from their own twenty to the Indian forty-two before turning the ball over on downs. Taking over from their own forty-six the Tribe used three plays to find the end zone again. This time it was Glover hitting Mobley in stride for a fifty-one-yard touchdown pass with nineteen seconds left before halftime. Restrepo kicked another PAT and the lead grew to 34-0. On the kickoff the returner let the ball go over his head, but the ball died near the goal line. By the time he picked it up he was tackled at the two-yard line. A penalty backed them up to the one and on the next play the Rebels fumbled, and Tre Hamilton fell on the loose ball for a touchdown with eight seconds left before halftime. Another Restrepo PAT made it 41-0 going into the break. The second half was played with a running clock, but the Indians kept up the scoring to start the half. A short kickoff gave the Tribe possession at their own forty-four. On first down Hamilton ran for twenty-three yards before Bryant added two more to the thirty-one. Kidd caught a twenty-nine-yard pass down to the two-yard line before Tim Sapp ran it in from there with 8:27 left in the third quarter. Restrepo kicked his sixth PAT giving Charlton a 48-0 lead. Atkinson would move the ball down to the Indian twenty-seven, but a pair of penalties led to Kidd intercepting a pass to end the drive. Charlton would begin a drive behind the running of Quincy Milton and Javion Lambert to reach the Rebel fifteen-yard line, but time would expire with the Tribe winning 48-0. The Indians had 394 yards of total offense averaging 11.6 yards per play during the game. Glover led the attack with 219 yards passing and three touchdowns while Bryant led the rushers with sixty-four yards on just five carries. Six Indian rushers picked up at least twenty yards on the ground. The defense was just as effective holding the Rebels to just seventy-four total yards while creating two turnovers. Charlton will have their second bye week this Friday before hosting Mitchell County the following week in a game of the last two remaining teams that are undefeated in region play.
