Investigators were on the scene of a shooting that occurred June 5 around 4:30 am. on Country Club Road. A white male (Dell Bennett – age 56) broke into a camper trailer belonging to his girlfriend (Sabrina Lankford age 45) and shot her. She called the Sheriff’s office and managed to get out of the trailer. As the Deputy Noah Prescott and a City of Folkston Officer Jonathan Nettles and Homeland Officer Cole Sturgill arrived on the scene, they discovered the female victim crawling from the trailer. Prescott and Nettles provided cover while Sturgill dragged the victim to safety.
The shooter barricaded himself inside the trailer and yelled for officers to “shoot me”! Negotiations were ignored and the shooter eventually shot himself.
Both the victim and shooter were transported to UF Shands Hospital where they underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition.
As of Monday morning, Bennett passed away from his injuries and Lankford was undergoing another surgery and plans to recover.
