The Charlton County Maiden softball team had a big week last week winning four region contests all by run rule to move to 8-5 on the season and 6-1 in Region 2-A.
The Charlton County football team dropped their first game of the year losing to Jeff Davis. But the Indians showed some grit after trailing by three touchdowns at the half to get within six points at one time.
The Bethune Middle School Braves won their third straight game to open the season defeating Bacon County 54-20. Elijah Thaxton scored six touchdowns and Khaden Milton added two more.
The Bethune Maidens claimed their first win after beating McIntosh County. They would take advantage of wildness by the McIntosh pitchers using nineteen walks and ten hit batters to their advantage in their 21-2 win.
Courtney Williams and the Minnesota Lynx clinched the number one seed in the upcoming playoffs after splitting a pair of games last week. The Lynx fell to the Seattle Storm before easily beating the Connecticut Sun. In the two games Williams scored thirty three points, grabbed ten rebounds and handed out fourteen assists. Williams also scored her 4000th career point against the Sun.
It was a big Saturday for a pair of former Indians playing in their first collegiate games over the weekend. Maurice Sims ran for 92 yards on just five carries including a seventy eight yard touchdown run in Tennessee Tech’s 65-0 win over Cumberland. Also, Elyiss Williams caught a twenty three yard touchdown pass as Georgia defeated Marshall 45-7.
There will be lots of changes in the college football polls after the opening weekend. Top ranked Texas lost to third ranked Ohio State. Fourth ranked Clemson fell to ninth ranked LSU and sixth ranked Notre Dame lost to Miami. Also eighth ranked Alabama was manhandled by Florida State.
The Florida Gators also won easily in their opener as they cruised past Long Island University 55-0.
The Atlanta Braves won two of three from the Miami Marlins but managed just one win in four tries against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Braves have been getting good performances from a pair of rookies as catcher Drake Baldwin is a candidate for Rookie of the Year while pitcher Hutson Waldrep has put together multiple good performances since being called up from the minors.
Chase Briscoe won for the second straight year at the Southern 500 at Darlington in the first round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Briscoe held off Tyler Reddick to automatically qualify to the round of twelve.
