Railfans and residents gathered for a memorable community Meet and Greet on Saturday, December 6, at the Folkston Train Museum and Depot, marking the official start of Winter Railwatch 2025. The event featured guest Danny Harmon, a well-known figure in the rail-watching community, who shared his enthusiasm for trains and rail history with visitors. As part of the festivities, organizers offered the first 100 attendees a free Winter Railwatch souvenir button, adorned with vibrant locomotive designs. The Meet and Greet was just one of many events scheduled as part of the Winter Rail Watch celebration, which attracts rail enthusiasts from all over the region. Held at the Folkston Train Museum, located near the famous Folkston Funnel, the event showcased the area’s appeal as a prime rail-watching spot.
The museum, a long-standing hub for train lovers, provided a relaxed and welcoming environment for families, photographers, and rail fans alike to connect and celebrate their shared passion for trains. Danny Harmon spoke about the event’s goals, explaining that it was to bring rail fans together in a more interactive way than simply watching trains alone. Harmon noted that the turnout exceeded expectations, with some visitors even driving overnight from Maryland to take part, underscoring the draw of Folkston’s unique rail landscape. He shared that his favorite part of Winter Railwatch is the opportunity to meet people from across the country, making it a vibrant experience for both him and the attendees. With its combination of scenic beauty, rail heritage, and community spirit, the Winter Railwatch event was a resounding success, bringing together a diverse group of rail enthusiasts and highlighting Folkston as a top destination for train watching.
