One Year Later: A Thank You to Charlton County

This week marks one year since we became the owners of the Charlton County Herald. Looking back, it is hard to believe how quickly the time has passed and how much we have learned along the way.

When we first took ownership of the newspaper, we knew it would be a challenge. What we didn’t fully realize was just how steep the learning curve would be. Newspaper design, page layout, deadlines, printing schedules, advertising, reporting, photography, website management, and all of the countless details that go into producing a newspaper each week have been both demanding and rewarding. There have been late nights, early mornings, and more than a few lessons learned through trial and error.

Through it all, Charlton County has welcomed us with open arms.

We have been humbled by the support we have received from readers, advertisers, local organizations, elected officials, churches, schools, and community members. While not every change has been met with universal agreement—and that’s part of any community newspaper—we have found that the overwhelming majority of people have encouraged us, offered suggestions, and supported our efforts to keep local journalism alive and thriving.

One of the things we have come to appreciate most over the past year is the people of Charlton County. This county is filled with hardworking individuals who genuinely care about their neighbors and their community. We have had the privilege of meeting business owners who not only want their businesses to succeed, but who also want to make a difference in the lives of those around them. Their generosity, volunteerism, and commitment to supporting local causes are inspiring.

That is one of the reasons we introduced our “Eat & Shop Local” coupon pages. We wanted to create an affordable way for local businesses to reach customers while encouraging residents to support the businesses that support our community. The response has been tremendous, and we are excited to continue offering these coupon pages. Our next “Eat & Shop Local” editions will be published on August 5 and August 19.

Over the past year, we have also worked to add new features that provide a little something for everyone. We’ve introduced crosswords, “Famous Birthdays,” and “This Day in History” sections to make the newspaper both informative and enjoyable. We continue to look for ways to improve and expand what we offer while remaining focused on local news and community events.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible people who help bring the Charlton County Herald to life each week. We are blessed to have a staff that genuinely cares about this community and the people who call it home.

Glenn, Kelvin, and Laurel each bring their own talents, perspectives, and dedication to the newspaper. Whether they’re covering local events, chasing down stories, taking photographs, writing articles, or spending countless hours making sure every edition is one our readers can enjoy, their hard work does not go unnoticed. They share our belief that every community event, every student achievement, every local business, and every person has a story worth telling.

Their commitment to serving Charlton County is one of the greatest strengths of this newspaper. They don’t just work here—they care deeply about the people, the history, and the future of this county. We are incredibly grateful for their dedication, professionalism, and willingness to go the extra mile each and every week.

Most importantly, we want to thank you.

Thank you for picking up the paper each week. Thank you for subscribing. Thank you for advertising with us. Thank you for sending us story ideas, photographs, event announcements, and words of encouragement. Every phone call, email, letter, and conversation reminds us why local newspapers still matter.

The Charlton County Herald belongs to this community. It serves as a record of our history, a celebration of our accomplishments, and a place where neighbors can stay connected to one another.

As we begin our second year, we want to hear from you. What would you like to see more of in the newspaper? Are there features you enjoy? New sections you’d like us to add? Community stories that deserve more attention?

Your feedback helps shape the future of the Herald, and we welcome your ideas.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making our first year as owners such a memorable experience. We are honored to serve Charlton County and look forward to many more years of sharing the stories that make this community such a special place to call home.

Have a Happy and Safe 4th of July.

HAPPY 250th BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!
