Construction continues on a new visitor center at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge as work advances on a facility that will eventually replace the refuge’s current visitor center. Refuge Manager Michael Lusk said the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once the new building is finished and operational, the existing visitor center will be demolished as part of a broader plan to modernize visitor services at the refuge. The new visitor center has made noticeable progress in recent months. The building’s exterior framing is complete, windows have been installed, and weather-resistant wrap now covers much of the structure. Construction crews continue work on both the interior and exterior as the project moves toward completion. According to Lusk, the project will not only provide visitors with a new facility but also create additional outdoor space. After the current visitor center is removed, the existing auditorium will be converted into a picnic area for visitors to enjoy while exploring the refuge. The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge attracts thousands of visitors each year who come to experience one of North America’s largest intact freshwater wetlands. The refuge is known for its diverse wildlife, scenic waterways, recreational opportunities, and educational programs. Officials expect the new visitor center to serve as an updated gateway to the refuge, providing a welcoming space for guests to learn about the Okefenokee’s natural resources and unique ecosystem before beginning their visit. As construction continues throughout the year, refuge officials remain focused on completing the project and preparing the new facility to serve visitors for years to come.
