The American Legion Auxiliary sponsored a Poppy Poster Contest for students in grades 2 through 12, including those with special needs. Seven grade classes competed, showcasing their artistic talents on an 11”x 14” poster board with the poppy as the central theme. In each division, judges selected a winner from every category, who received $50 and had a $50 donation made in their name to the Children of Warriors National Presidents’ Scholarship fund. This year, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 30 celebrated two winners: Rose Waters from St. George Elementary School and Nevaeh Costley from Bethune Middle School. Judges named Rose Waters as a state winner of the Poppy Poster contest, while they recognized Nevaeh Costley as both a state and national winner. Remarkably, Nevaeh became the first person from Charlton to earn National Winner status; her poster now features on the ALA’s website. Regarding this achievement, Gloria Chambers of ALA Unit 130 said, “They never had a student selected as a National Winner, and it was a big deal for them.” Nevaeh reflected on her accomplishment, saying she is very proud and admitting she did not initially grasp its importance but now does.
