Nell was raised on the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp, where she developed a deep love and appreciation for the land and way of life that shaped her. She enjoyed gardening, hunting, bluegrass music, and especially fishing. She was a feisty, strong-willed woman who loved her family dearly and brought her own special spirit to everything she did.
Nell was an excellent baker and was especially known for her delicious Lemon Squash pies, a favorite that will be remembered and cherished by all who had the pleasure of tasting them.
She also worked at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, where she originally served as a hostess. She enjoyed sharing her stories and experiences of growing up in the swamp with visitors, giving them a personal glimpse into the unique life and history of the Okefenokee.
One of the memorable highlights of her time at the refuge was the pleasure of hosting and cooking for former President Jimmy Carter.
Nell will be remembered for her love of family, her independent and feisty nature, her wonderful cooking and baking, and the stories she shared about growing up beside the Okefenokee. Her life was deeply rooted in Charlton County, and her memory will remain a cherished part of the community and, most of all, in the hearts of her family.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, family traditions, and memories that will be treasured for generations to come.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 13 at Shepard-Roberson Funeral Home in Folkston, GA from 1-2 PM. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home beginning at 2:00 PM. Interment will be in Sardis Cemetery.
