The Charlton County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously at their meeting on Thursday June 4, to lift the temporary burn ban that was adopted on February 22. Many residents were happy about the decision but some wondered if the burn ban was cut too short. Less that 48 hours after the ban was lifted, a brush fire started on Eston Prescott Road.
The Charlton County EMA posted an update Monday, “According to the latest information provided by the Georgia Forestry Commission, the brush fire is currently estimated at 111 acres and is 100% contained.
Forestry personnel and supporting local public safety agencies continue to monitor the fire area, address hotspots, and strengthen containment lines as needed. There are currently no road closures and no evacuation orders associated with this incident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
As a reminder, although the local burn ban has been lifted, residents should continue to exercise caution when conducting any outdoor burning.
Always ensure burning is conducted in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, never leave a fire unattended, keep a water source readily available, and fully extinguish any fire before leaving the area. Weather conditions, wind shifts, and dry fuels can allow fires to spread quickly and unexpectedly.
Charlton County EMA will continue to provide updates as information becomes available from responding agencies.
