Tribe beats Atkinson, weather cancels two

COLE CRAWFORD (11) SLIDES BACK ONTO FIRST BASE, SAFE.

The Charlton County baseball team had three games scheduled last week, but the Indians could only play once as wet playing conditions canceled games ver- sus Lanier County and Brantley County after beating Atkinson County early in the week.

The Indians opened up play on Tuesday at home against the Reb- els and after Atkinson scored once in the top of the first inning the Indians answered back with four of their own. Gantt Geiger walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a fly ball and scored on another wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. Ian Vickers then singled and stole second be- fore scoring on a hit by Conner Lloyd. A walk to Griffin Thomas and Jude Shaw getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases. A pop fly was misplayed and two runs scored making it 4-1.

Charlton added another run in the second. Colton Crews hit a one out triple and scored on a single by Cole Crawford to push the lead to 5-1.

Atkinson scored once in the third inning and the score stayed until the bottom of the fifth. Lloyd drew a two out walk and Thomas singled to put runners at the corners. Thomas stole second and an er- ror on the play allowed Lloyd to score the game’s final run making it 6-2.

Geiger pitched six strong innings allowing two earned runs while striking out nine batters to pick up the win. Thomas came on in relief and struck out two batters in a scoreless seventh inning. Crews, Crawford, Vickers, Lloyd and Thomas each had one hit, while Crawford and Lloyd both had RBI’s. Charlton will host Turner County on Tues- day, before heading to Callahan on Thursday to play West Nassau. On Friday, the Tribe travels to Ashburn to face Turner and will make up the game against Lanier County on Saturday in Lakeland.
