Congratulations to the Charlton County wrestling team for winning the Area Duals Tournament in Ocilla last Friday. The Indians will host a State Preliminary Tournament this Saturday at the high school gym.

Also, congratulations to Maiden basketball player Jordan Vernon, for passing the 1,000 point mark in her career.

The Maidens are currently sitting on top of Region 2-A so far with a perfect 7-0 record, but they have several tough matchups remaining. Meanwhile, the Indians are sitting at 4-3 in the region and are looking to improve on that in order to receive one of the four playoff berths.

While winter sports are in full gear, it won't be long before spring sports begin their practices. The Charlton County baseball team will begin practicing on Monday, January 17 as they hope for a deep playoff run again this season.

Meanwhile, former Indian baseball players will be back in action soon. L.J. Talley will be beginning his third season in the Toronto Blue Jays organization and will be heading to spring training in February. Jack Gowen will begin his senior season pitching at the University of Georgia. Trevor Knowles will be catching at Gordon State College for his sophomore season, while Connor Nelson will be a freshman at Flagler College. Also, beginning their college careers will be Shacario Bailey and Tristan Herring at South Georgia State College.

The Jacksonville Jaguars played their best game of the year in their season finale to upset the Indianapolis Colts 26-11. Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes and the defense stymied the Colts offense all game long. The Jaguars finished the year at 3-14 and despite the win will still have the first overall pick in the NFL Draft this spring.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons ended the season on a sour note as they fell to the New Orleans Saints 30-20 to finish the season with a 7-10 record.

The NFL playoffs have been set with the Green Bay Packers receiving the first round bye in the NFC, while the Tennessee Titans claimed the bye in the AFC. First round matchups in the NFC are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers playing the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys versus the San Francisco 49er's, and the Los Angeles Rams against the Arizona Cardinals. In the AFC the Kansas City Chiefs will play the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Buffalo Bills will play the New England Patriots and the Cincinnati Bengals will host the Las Vegas Raiders.

In men's college hoops, second ranked Duke was stunned by Miami(FL), third ranked Purdue fell to Wisconsin and sixth ranked Kansas was beaten by Texas Tech.

Cameron Smith opened up the PGA Tour with a record performance at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. Smith shot 34 under par and needed every bit of the record to hold off Jon Rahm by one stroke.
