Charlton County Indian football and Maiden softball is right around the corner. I erroneously had reported that practice begins on August 1, but you'll have to wait one more day as Monday, August 2 is the official first day to begin practice. It will be good to see the local athletes back out and competing. 

Courtney Williams has some time off as the Olympics are going on. The WNBA has shut down until August 15 allowing their players to compete in the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

L.J. Talley continues to do well in his first full season of minor league baseball. Talley is currently second on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in RBI's (39) and third on the team with 13 doubles and six home runs.

With college football and the NFL coming up soon Charlton County alumni will be represented well. Chris Milton begins his first season with the New York Giants after having stints with the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans. In the college ranks, Teon Burroughs will return to Reinhardt University for his final season after garnering All American honors last season. Michael Elliott will finally get to see the field after a redshirt season and last year being canceled at West Georgia. Travon Greene and Marcell Maxwell return for their sophomore season at Defiance College in Ohio. Seaquan Clark will see the field for the first time also, after his first season at Albany State was canceled by Covid.

The Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Phoenix Suns four games to two to win their first NBA championship in 50 years when a young Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was running the court.

The big news coming out of college football last week was the speculation that Oklahoma and Texas were going to leave the Big 12 Conference and join the Southeastern Conference. No final decision has been made, but it would definitely add more good teams into what is the toughest conference already.

At the SEC Media Days, Alabama was picked by the media to win the SEC title once again with Georgia being selected to win the Eastern Division. Georgia had ten players selected to the Preseason All SEC Team, while Florida had four players chosen.

The Atlanta Braves continue to play mediocre baseball. After splitting two games with the Padres and four with the Phillies the Braves sit at 48-50 on the season and are five games out of first place. The Braves have yet to be above .500 the entire year.

At the 3M Open in Minnesota, Cameron Champ became a champion for the third time in his career on the PGA Tour. Champ won by two strokes over three other competitors.

The NASCAR Cup Series races are on hold until August 8 when the drivers head to Watkins Glen hoping to secure their spot in the playoff races.
