Good news on the home front as Charlton County head football coach, Russ Murray, was released from the hospital after undergoing bypass surgery. Murray is resting comfortably and is on the mend.
The Charlton County basketball teams both defeated Atkinson County in their lone game last week. The boys improved to 10-1 on the season, while the girls are 8-13. This week will wrap up the regular season for both squads before opening the Region 2-A Tournament.
Courtney Williams scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds in her team's loss on Saturday in Turkey. For the season Williams has averaged 23.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.
The Georgia high school sports world lost a tremendous man last week, as Irwin County football coach Buddy Nobles lost his battle with cancer. In his final game he led Irwin to the Class A State Championship this past season.
Another tragedy struck on Sunday afternoon, as former NBA superstar, Kobe Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles. The crash claimed eight other lives, including one of Bryant's daughters. Bryant is the fourth all-time leading scorer in NBA history.
In college hoops Gonzaga didn't lose, but dropped to second in the polls behind Baylor. For the first time this season, no one in the top ten lost a game, as the top five now sits at Baylor, Gonzaga, Kansas, San Diego State, and Florida State.
In women's hoops the lone top ten teams to go down were seventh ranked Oregon State which lost to fourth ranked Oregon and ninth ranked Mississippi State which fell to top ranked South Carolina.

One week before the Super Bowl showdown in Miami between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49er's, the NFL held its annual Pro Bowl Game in Orlando. Jacksonville Jaguar defensive lineman Calais Campbell, had a sack and forced a fumble that was returned for a touchdown, while fellow lineman Josh Allen blocked an extra point to help the AFC defeat the NFC squad 38-33.
On the PGA Tour Marc Leishman held off a late charge by Jon Rahm to win the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines by two strokes for his fifth career win.
