The Charlton County Indians head into the final week of the regular season holding on to the last home playoff position for the first round of the state playoffs. The Tribe ranks 16th through Sunday in the most recent power rankings. The top eight seeds get first round byes while seeds nine through 16 will host opening rounds.
The Charlton County track teams were in action in Claxton on Monday and Tuesday for the Area Meet, while the Maiden softball team heads to Woodstock for the State Sectional Tournament on Wednesday.
Former Indian Teon Burroughs wrapped up spring practice for Reinhardt University and was named the team’s Defensive MVP for the spring season. Burroughs will be entering his senior season this fall.
The second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs dropped their first conference series of the season after Tennessee took two of three games in Knoxville. After being shut out in the first two games, Georgia rallied back in the finale for a 7-1 win.
Earlier in the week, the Dawgs won easily over Georgia Tech. Former Indian L.J. Talley picked up five hits during the week and still leads Georgia in batting average at .358.
Courtney Williams scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Lointek Gernika evened up their playoff series against Valencia at one game a piece. The two teams will play a deciding third game to determine which team will advance.
Virginia beat Texas Tech, 85-77, in overtime to claim their first ever NCAA men’s basketball championship. De’Andre Hunter scored 22 second-half points, including a three-point shot to send the game into overtime for the Cavaliers.
Heading into Sunday’s game against the New York Mets, the Atlanta Braves were sitting in third place in the National League East. The early part of the season has the Braves with an 8-6 record and just a half-game behind the Philadelphia Phillies and a full game behind the Mets.
The Braves have recently extended the contracts of two of their young potential superstars. Outfielder Ronald Acuna, Jr. signed an eight-year, 100 million-dollar contract and second baseman Ozzie Albies to a seven-year 35 million-dollar contract.
The Jacksonville Sharks opened up their 2019 National Arena League season at home on Saturday night against the expansion New York Streets.
Unfortunately, it would be the upstart team from New York taking home the win, 52-41. The Sharks will be on the road this Friday to play the Columbus Lions.
The NBA playoffs are underway and several underdog teams won the opening games of their series. Only time will tell if they can sustain that momentum and claim the series.
At The Masters, Tiger Woods took the lead for good on the 15th hole and held off a trio of challengers to win by one stroke. It was Woods’ first major championship in 11 years and his first Masters title since 2005.
Martin Truex, Jr. held off Clint Bowyer and Joey Logano to win the NASCAR Cup Series race at the Richmond Raceway.
