The Charlton County football team ended a disappointing season last Friday night with a 28-14 loss to Lanier County to finish the season with a 1-9 record. 

With football over, basketball will begin soon with the Maidens and Indians opening up in a few weeks. The schedule has the Tribe opening on the road at Thomson on November 16, while both squads will be in action against Glynn Academy on November 20.

Bethune Middle School will also begin their hoops season soon as they open up on the road against Yulee Middle School on November 21. 

Courtney Williams continues to play well for the Izmit squad over in Turkey. In her latest game, Williams scored 24 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out six assists.

Chris Milton returned for the Tennessee Titans after missing several games due to an injury. He finished with one tackle as the Titans upset the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-32.

Raykwon Anderson and his Appalachian State teammates shook off their first loss last week to Georgia Southern and shocked South Carolina, 20-15, in Columbia last Saturday.

Georgia and Florida both had no problems with their opponents last weekend with Georgia shutting out Missouri, 27-0, while the Gators blanked Vanderbilt, 56-0.

The first College Football Playoff rankings came out last week with Ohio State, LSU, Alabama, and Penn State holding the top four spots with Clemson and Georgia coming in as the next two. But after Alabama lost to LSU and Penn State lost to Minnesota the rankings should get a shakeup this week.

Valdosta State won their 24th-straight game to clinch at least a share of the Gulf South Conference. The Blazers wrap up the regular season against West Georgia this weekend.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had the week off last week in hopes of bouncing back from a 4-5 start to the season. Nick Foles is expected to start at quarterback this week after being injured in the Jaguars opening game.

The Atlanta Falcons came into their game against the New Orleans Saints with a 1-7 record, while the Saints were 7-1. But the Falcons came out on fire and shut down the high-powered offense of the Saints to win, 26-9. The Falcons sacked Drew Brees six times to surpass their season total coming into the game.

Ronald Acuna, Jr., Freddie Freeman, and Ozzie Albies all were first time recipients of the Silver Slugger Award which honors the best offensive players at each position.

It's not often that one scores 60 points in an NBA game, but Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers did so last week against the Brooklyn Nets. Despite the effort it wasn't enough as the Nets won, 119-115.

College basketball got off to a bang last week with top-ranked Michigan State falling to second-ranked Kentucky, while fourth-ranked Duke upended third ranked Kansas.

Georgia got 24 points from highly-touted freshman Anthony Edwards to win their opener against Western Carolina. Sixth-ranked Florida won their opener against North Florida before falling to Florida State.

At the NASCAR Cup Series race in Phoenix, Denny Hamlin clinched his spot in the final four of the playoffs. He joins Martin Truex, Jr. and Kevin Harvick as automatic qualifiers, while Kyle Busch qualified on points as the championship race takes place this Sunday at Homestead, FL.
