The Charlton County basketball teams began play at the Holiday Hoopfest Tournament in Thomasville on Monday. Both teams were scheduled to face Terrell Academy in their first games. The tournament runs through Wednesday.
The Bethune Middle School basketball teams entered the Christmas break with the Maidens remaining unbeaten at 8-0 and the Braves breaking even at 4-4.
The Charlton County wrestling team put in a good performance last weekend at the Wildcat Invitational. Congratulations to Thomas Johnson for placing first in his weight class and to Gage Renfroe, Jaylen Lilley and Kyler Williams for placing in the tourney.
Former Indian Teon Burroughs, stepped on the field for the last time as a collegiate athlete on Saturday, as he was selected to play in the NAIA Senior Classic in Durham, North Carolina. Earlier in the week, Burroughs, was recognized as he was named NAIA Second Team All American.
Valdosta State fell short in their quest to claim their fifth national championship on Saturday, as they fell in the title game to Ferris State.
The Jacksonville Jaguars fired head coach Urban Meyer early last week, but the results on the field stayed the same after losing to the Houston Texans 30-16 to fall to 2-13 on the year. Right now the Jaguars are in line to pick up the first overall pick in the draft for the second straight year.
The Atlanta Falcons fell to 6-8 on the season after losing to the San Francisco 49er's on the road Sunday 31-13. The Falcons may have to win out the rest of the season in order to possibly claim a playoff spot.
The Green Bay Packers became the first team to clinch a playoff berth after edging the Baltimore Ravens. The win clinched the NFL North Division crown for them.
For the first time in several weeks there were no upsets in the top five of men's college hoops. The top five of Baylor, Duke, Purdue, UCLA and Gonzaga all made it through the week unscathed.
The same could not be said in the women's game. Top ranked South Carolina remained unbeaten, but second ranked North Carolina State was upset by seventeenth ranked Georgia. Also fifth ranked Baylor fell to Michigan, sixth-ranked Connecticut lost to Louisville and seventh-ranked Tennessee fell to Stanford.
In the NBA, Stephen Curry broke the record to become the all time leader in three point baskets made as he now has made 2974 of the long range shots.
