The Charlton County Indian baseball team won two of three games from Irwin County last week to gain a one game advantage in the region schedule with three game series' against Atkinson County and Lanier County remaining in the regular season. The Tribe currently holds a 13-2 region record, while Irwin stands at 12-3.
Former all state Indian football player, Chris Milton, has signed to play with the New York Giants after being released by the Tennessee Titans last month.
Another former Indian, Teon Burroughs and his Reinhardt University teammates wrapped up a perfect 8-0 regular season with a 42-14 win over Kentucky Christian. Burroughs was in on two tackles during the game.
Jack Gowen made two appearances for the University of Georgia last week against Clemson and South Carolina. Pitching an inning in each game Gowen combined for four strikeouts while not allowing a run.
Trevor Knowles had a big game last week for Gordon College against ABAC. Knowles picked up two hits and drew two walks while scoring three times.
In the NCAA basketball tournament the two teams who have held the top spots in the polls most of the season, Gonzaga and Baylor have advanced to the finals which were held on Monday. Baylor had no problem disposing of Houston, but undefeated Gonzaga needed a near mid court shot in overtime to knock off UCLA.
In the NCAA Women's Tournament Stanford held off South Carolina by one point to advance to the finals, while upstart Arizona knocked off Connecticut to earn their place in the championship game. In the finals it would be Stanford holding off Arizona by a point as a last second shot by the Wildcats went awry.
In other NCAA basketball news Roy Williams, coach at North Carolina announced that he was retiring after 33 seasons. Williams won over 900 games and won three national championships in his time at Kansas and North Carolina.
The Atlanta Braves had a rough start to open up their season. The Braves were swept in three games by the Philadelphia Phillies and only scored three runs in the process.
Jordan Spieth won the Valero Texas Open by two strokes over Charley Hoffman as golfers tuned up for the Masters Tournament this week in Augusta. Spieth's win was his first since claiming the British Open four years ago.
Last Monday Joey Logano claimed the checkered flag at Bristol in NASCAR's first Cup Series race on a dirt track in over 50 years. Drivers took the Easter weekend off and will be back in action this weekend at the Martinsville Speedway.
