The Charlton County basketball teams both won two of three games last week, as the boys team is now 5-2 on the year, while the Maidens ran their record to 3-4. Both teams will wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule this week as they played at Clinch County on Monday and will be on the road against Brantley County and Appling County on Thursday and Friday.
The Bethune Middle School teams continued their winning ways last week with win over Fernandina Beach. The Maidens are a perfect 4-0 so far, while the Braves are 3-1. They hosted Callahan on Monday and will host St. Marys on Wednesday before ending the week at Hilliard on Friday.
Courtney Williams scored 31 of her team's 66 points, but it wasn't enough as her Izmit squad lost 85-66 to fall to 5-4 on the season.
Charlton's Raykwon Anderson will be in action this Saturday when Appalachian State takes on the University of Alabama-Birmingham in the New Orleans Bowl. Game time is 9:00 p.m. on ESPN.
LSU's Joe Burrow won the Heisman Trophy over the weekend, beating out Jalen Hurts, Justin Fields, and Chase Young. Georgia's Rodrigo Blankenship won the Lou Groza Award as the nation's best kicker.
The Jacksonville Jaguars scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns including the game winner with 31 seconds left to beat the Oakland Raiders, 20-16. The win improves the Jaguars record to 5-9 on the season.
The Atlanta Falcons scored the game-winning touchdown with just two seconds left and then scored on a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to upset the San Francisco 49er's, 29-22. The Falcons improve to 5-9 on the season.
With two weeks left in the regular season, the Patriots, Ravens, and Chiefs have clinched playoff spots in the American Conference. In the National Conference, the Packers, Saints, Seahawks, and 49er's have all earned playoff positions.
Louisville became the latest number-ranked college basketball team to go down after Texas Tech knocked them off, 70-57. They become the fourth top-ranked team to go down so far this season. Forth-ranked Maryland also went down to defeat to Penn State and fifth-ranked Michigan lost twice to Illinois and Oregon.
The United States team defeated the International team, 16-14, at the President's Cup in Melbourne, Australia last weekend. The U.S. Squad, captained by Tiger Woods, entered the final day, trailing 10-8, before making their comeback on Sunday.
