The Charlton County basketball teams continue play this week with home games against Pierce County, Lanier County, and Hilliard on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The Maidens are currently 4-7 while the boys’ record stands at 6-5.

The Bethune Middle School teams defeated Hilliard prior to Christmas. The Maidens remain perfect with a 7-0 record, while the Braves are right behind with a 6-1 record. They will not resume play until January 8 when they travel to play St. Marys Middle School.

Courtney Williams scored 52 points, grabbed 24 rebounds, and dished out 11 assists as her Izmit squad split two games last week in Turkey. From the best I can tell trying to translate Turkish articles Izmit qualified for the league playoffs.

Charlton's Raykwon Anderson finished up his freshman season at Appalachian State as the Mountaineers defeated the University of Alabama-Birmingham in the New Orleans Bowl 31-17 to finish the season at 13-1. For the season Anderson rushed for 223 yards and two touchdowns in backup duty.

Although he is on injured reserve Chris Milton's Tennessee Titans earned a wildcard playoff spot. They will play against the New England Patriots next week.

Two teams have advanced to the National Championship Game in college football. In the first semifinal game last Saturday, the LSU Tigers totally dominated Oklahoma 63-28 as Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow passed for seven touchdowns and ran for another to lead the rout. In a much more competitive game defending champion Clemson rallied from a 16-0 deficit to beat Ohio State 29-23 to advance.

The national championship game won't take place for another two weeks, as the teams will begin preparation for the game in New Orleans on January 13.

The major bowl games get underway this week with Florida playing Virginia in the Orange Bowl on Monday, while Georgia plays Baylor in the Sugar Bowl on Wednesday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars won their season finale on Sunday as they dominated the second half in a 38-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts. The win gives the Jaguars a final 6-10 record.

The Atlanta Falcons won their fourth game in a row to close the season at 7-9. An interception return for a touchdown in overtime gave the Falcons a 28-22 win.

In addition to the Titans playing the Patriots next week, the Buffalo Bills will play the Houston Texans, while the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs received first round byes in the AFC.

In the NFC the San Francisco 49er's and Green bay Packers will get first round byes while the New Orleans Saints battle the Minnesota Vikings and the Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Seattle Seahawks.

Gonzaga became the sixth school to occupy the top spot in college hoops this season after Louisville lost to Texas Tech and Kentucky. Second ranked Ohio State will fall after losing to West Virginia meaning Duke and Kansas should move back up in the rankings.
