The Charlton County Maidens softball team lost to Lanier County to open last week but bounced back to win over Atkinson County, Glynn Academy, and Echols County. They are currently in second place in Region 2-A behind Lanier with a 5-1 region mark.
The Indian football team dropped their first game of the season last Friday night to McIntosh County Academy. The Tribe fell behind early and never could catch back up in the 29-21 loss. The Indians showed a fighting spirit and never gave up despite the early deficit.
Congratulations to Charlton County senior running back Tony Cobb for being recognized as the Coastal Pines Technical College Player of the Week by 912 Sports for his 357 yards rushing and three touchdowns against Long County.
The Tennessee Titans kicked a late field goal to come from behind to defeat the Minnesoya Vikings 31-30. Chris Milton was in on one special teams tackles for the Titans.
The Jacksonville Jaguars had a prime time television slot Thursday night but showed they weren’t quite ready for the bright lights as they fell to 1-2 on the season after losing to the Miami Dolphins, 31-13.
For the second week in a row, the Atlanta Falcons blew a big second-half lead in losing to the Chicago Bears. The Falcons led, 26-10, but the Bears scored 20 fourth-quarter points to keep the Falcons winless at 0-3.
The first big week of the college football season saw several upsets and near upsets as conference play got underway. The fourth ranked Georgia Bulldogs struggled in the first half against Arkansas before rallying behind Blackshear native Stetson Bennett in the second half to pull away 37-10.
Third-ranked Oklahoma wasn’t so luck as they squandered a twenty one point fourth quarter lead and lost 38-35 to Kansas State. Sixth ranked and defending national champion LSU got knocked off by Mississippi State 44-34. Eighth ranked Texas needed a comeback to force overtime and beat Texas Tech 63-56 while tenth ranked Texas A&M struggled to beat Vanderbilt 17-10.
Meanwhile, second-ranked Alabama and fifth-ranked Florida both had no problems in winning their games against Missouri and Ole’ Miss, respectively.
The Atlanta Braves clinched the National League East title and secured the second seed for the playoffs. They will open up the playoffs in a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds beginning Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Lakers earned a spot in the NBA Finals for the first time in a decade after beating the Denver Nuggets in fives in the Western Conference Finals. They will be joined by the Miami Heat who ended the Boston Celtics season in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals.
The first race of the second round of the NASCAR Cup Series took place Sunday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and it would be the hometown driver taking home the win. Kurt Busch secured his spot for the next round of the playoffs by edging out Matt DiBenedetto in overtime and claiming his first win of the season.
