The Maiden softball team continues to get good pitching and timely hitting as they improved to 8-2 on the season. Last week they beat Liberty County, Telfair County, and Atkinson County. They have a busy week this week playing Brunswick and Glynn Academy at home on Tuesday and Wednesday, before heading to Irwin County on Thursday. Then on Friday and Saturday they will be playing in a tournament in Augusta.
The inexperience of the Charlton County football team showed last Friday night as they fell to Brantley County in Nahunta. The Tribe will have their hands full again this Friday when they host Appling County.
The Connecticut Sun knocked off the Seattle Storm and New York Liberty last week. Courtney Williams played a big role in both games scoring 17 points against Seattle and a team-high 26 points against New York. The Sun remain a game out for the best record with three regular season games remaining.
NFL teams had to cut their rosters down to the 53-player limit and unfortunately for Chris Milton he was one of the final players released by the Indianapolis Colts. Hopefully, he can sign with another team soon.
L.J. Talley's fi rst professional season came to a close on Monday. After a slow start, Talley came on strong in the last month batting .256 with five home runs and nineteen runs batted in during August.
Raykwon Anderson made his collegiate debut Saturday for Appalachian State against East Tennessee State. Anderson didn't record any statistics, but playing as a true freshman is a sign of good things to come.
The third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs opened up their season Saturday night with a 30-6 dominating performance against Vanderbilt. De'Andre Swift rushed for a team-high 149 yards as the Dawgs totaled 481 yards for the night.
Top-ranked Clemson and second-ranked Alabama had no problems in their wins over Georgia Tech and Duke, respectively. But Tennessee, who many had thought to be an improved team, was shocked at home by Georgia State, 36-28. Florida State squandered a 31-13 lead as Boise State scored the final twenty-three points of the game to beat the Seminoles in Tallahassee, 36-31.
The Atlanta Braves started out last week with a loss to the Colorado Rockies and then split two games with the Toronto Blue Jays before ending the week with a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox. They remain 5.5 games ahead of the Washington Nationals in the National League East.
Jason Verlander, of the Houston Astros, tossed his third career no-hitter last Sunday, blanking the Toronto Blue Jays, 2-0. Verlander struck out 14 batters and walked just one in his masterpiece.
The Atlanta Falcons ended a 12-game preseason losing streak when they defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, 31-12, in the final tune-up game for both teams. The Jaguars had their first winless preseason in franchise history. They will open up the regular season this Sunday at home against the Kansas City Chiefs while the Falcons will be on the road facing the Minnesota Vikings.
