Congratulations to former Charlton County standout Champ Bailey for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Watching him grow up you knew he was good, but Saturday’s induction makes him among the elite to have ever played the game. 

The Maiden softball team had their season opener cancelled in Brunswick due to wet field conditions, so now they will open-up the season on Tuesday against Irwin County at home. Staying at home, they will play Echols County on Thursday and North Cobb on Saturday. 

The annual “Soap Game” intra-squad scrimmage will take place on Thursday at Indian Field. Here’s your first chance to see the 2019 version of the Charlton County and Bethune Middle School football squads. Admission will be liquid laundry soap used by the teams during the season. 

Courtney Williams scored 12 points in the Connecticut Sun’s win over the Chicago Sky, and then scored 12 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter to help them knock off the Phoenix Mercury. Finally on Sunday, the Sun won their seventh game in a row with Williams leading the way with 28 points. 

Chris Milton and his Indianapolis Colts teammates will have their first preseason game on Thursday night when they face the Buffalo Bills on the road. 

Jack Gowen finished up the regular season of the Coastal Plain League with a 3-0 record and one save for the Savannah Bananas. Savannah entered the playoffs Sunday against the Macon Bacon. 

The preseason college football polls were released last week with Alabama and Clemson holding down the top two positions. Georgia came in as the third-ranked team while Florida was ranked eighth. 

The Atlanta Braves won four out of seven games during the week from the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds to maintain a seven-game lead in the National League East. The Braves picked up relief pitchers Chris Martin, Shane Greene, and Mark Melancon at the trading deadline to bolster their bullpen for the stretch run. 

The Seattle Mariners were no-hit for the second time in less than a month, when then Houston Astros used four pitchers to combine for the hitless, 9-0, shutout. Aaron Sanchez pitched the first six innings and Will Harris, Joe Biagini, and Chris Devenski each pitched one hitless inning. 

The Jacksonville Sharks hosted the Columbus Lions in the National Arena League semifinals on Tuesday in hoping to advance to the championship game. 

The NFL season got underway last Thursday when the Denver Broncos defeated the Atlanta Falcons, 14-10, in the Hall of Fame Game. Neither team played many starters. The Falcons will play again this Thursday when they face the Miami Dolphins. 

Meanwhile the Nick Foles era for the Jacksonville Jaguars gets underway Thursday night when they travel to play the Baltimore Ravens. 

At the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, J.T. Poston rallied from three strokes back, and beat Webb Simpson by one stroke to claim his first-ever PGA Tour win. 

The NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen saw Chase Elliott edge out Martin Truex, Jr. Elliott started at the pole position and led for all but eight laps of the race to claim his second win of the year.
