The Charlton County Indians basketball team improved to 16-1 after beating Clinch County and Atkinson County last week. The fifth ranked Tribe sits on top of the region standings with a perfect 4-0 record so far.
The Maidens won two of three to improve to 8-10 so far. They picked up wins over Appling County and Atkinson County and fell to second ranked Clinch County. They are currently 2-2 in region play
Meanwhile, the Charlton County baseball team continues to practice in anticipation of a preseason scrimmage against Vidalia on February 3 at Indian Field. The regular season opens on February 14 when the Tribe hosts Brunswick.
The Bethune Middle School baseball team was set to open their season on Monday.
Recreation basketball games are in full swing with games being played every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in the upcoming weeks.
The Jacksonville Jaguars saw their season of destiny come to an end last Saturday in Kansas City against the Chiefs. The Jaguars put up a gallant fight, but fell short by a 27-20 score. Despite the loss the Jaguars seem to be a team on the rise and much more will be expected of them next season.
Joining Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game will be the Cincinnati Bengals who went on the road and beat the Buffalo Bills 27-10.
In the NFC the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the New York Giants 38-7 to advance to the NFC Championship Game where they will be joined by the San Francisco 49er's who beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-12
In college hoops six of the top 10 teams suffered defeat with only third ranked Purdue, fourth ranked Alabama, ninth ranked Tennessee and tenth ranked Virginia making it through the week unscathed. Top ranked Houston fell to Temple, while second ranked Kansas lost to both Kansas State and TCU.
In the NBA the Atlanta Hawks have won seven of their last 10 games, but still remain 1.5 games behind the Miami Heat in the Southeast Division. The Hawks are currently at 24-23 on the season. The Boston Celtics own the league's best record at 35-12 and sit atop the Eastern Conference, while the Denver Nuggets are 33-13 and own the best record in the Western Conference.
