The open week seems to be coming at a good time for the Charlton County football squad after the Tribe dropped their second straight game to fall to 3-2 on the season. The second ranked Class AA Pierce County squad was too much for the Tribe last Friday night.
The Maiden softball team picked up wins in two of three games last week; falling in extra innings to Brantley County before picking up wins over region foes Echols and Turner County. The Maidens continue to get strong pitching performances from both Charli Woolard and Emilee Zetmeir.
Courtney Williams and the Connecticut Sun fell to the Las Vegas Aces three games to one in the WNBA Finals. In the final three games Williams averaged 15 points a game, but in the end it wouldn't be enough as the Sun lost in the championship round for the second time in four years.
L.J. Talley's hot streak continued last week as he batted .368 while driving in 10 runs in five games played. Included was his seventh home run of the year.
Naajee Smith made his collegiate debut for Methodist University last Saturday. While he didn't record any statistics it's good to see the true freshman get some playing time.
The top ranked Georgia Bulldogs continued to shut down their opponents. The Dawgs jumped out to a 48-0 lead before South Carolina scored the first touchdown of the season against Georgia in the final minute of the game.
Meanwhile Florida held off a game South Florida bunch when a game tying field goal was missed allowing the Gators to prevail 31-28.
The Atlanta Braves remain one game back of the Mets for the division lead with 16 games remaining on the schedule, including three against the Mets.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros became the first two teams to clinch playoff berths.
The Jacksonville Jaguars looked like a totally different team from a week ago as they shut out the Indianapolis Colts 24-0, the first shutout since 2018. Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes, while the defense recorded five quarterback sacks and intercepted two passes. The win evens their record at 1-1.
The Atlanta Falcons dropped to 0-2 on the season after losing to the Los Angeles Rams on the road. The Falcons fell behind 28-3 in the third quarter before making a rally before losing 31-27.
At the Bristol Motor Speedway, Chris Bueschler became the third straight non-playoff driver to win in the playoffs. He held off Chase Elliott to pick up the win. The playoff field was reduced from 16 to 12 after the race with Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Tyler Reddick and Austin Dillon all seeing their hopes of a championship disappear.
