The Maiden softball team looked good in their opening week of the season after run-ruling region foes Irwin County and Echols County and falling late to Class AAAAAAA North Cobb. 

The annual “Soap Game” intra-squad scrimmage last Thursday allowed the Indian coaches to get a better look at position battles going on and what improvements need to be made. 

The Tribe will get to battle another opponent this Friday night when they travel to Blackshear to scrimmage Pierce County. 

The Bethune Middle School Braves also got a lot of work in last week by participating in the Soap Game and then travelling to Camden County for the Tyrone Jones Classic on Saturday. The Braves open up their season on Wednesday, at home, when they play St. Marys Middle School. 

The Connecticut Sun saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end last week when they fell to the Minnesota Lynx, and their road woes continued after they lost to the Las Vegas Aces. The losses dropped them one game behind the Washington Mystics for the league’s best record. Courtney Williams scored 21 points in the two contests. 

Chris Milton and his Indianapolis Colts teammates dropped their opening preseason game to the Buffalo Bills. Milton saw action at defensive back and on special teams. The Colts return to action Saturday when they host the Cleveland Browns. 

L.J. Talley had his most productive week of his minor league career up to this point. Talley homered twice and drove in five runs on consecutive days for the Lansing Lugnuts, the Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. 

The Atlanta Braves won two of three games last week from the Minnesota Twins and split four games with the Miami Marlins to maintain their lead in the Eastern Division. Ronald Acuna, Jr. has been on fire during the month of August hitting eight home runs. 

The Jacksonville Sharks advanced to the championship game of the National Arena League after knocking off the Columbus Lions, 67- 43. The Sharks will host the Carolina Cobras on Saturday to determine the league champion. 

Meanwhile the other football team in Jacksonville played their opening preseason game last week. The Jaguars didn’t show a lot of promise as they dropped a 29-0 decision to the Baltimore Ravens. In the Jaguars defense, they are dealing with a lot of nagging injuries and not many starters played during the game. They will try to improve this week when they host the Philadelphia eagles on Thursday night. 

The Atlanta Falcons fell to 0-2 in the preseason after falling to the Miami Dolphins, 34-27. As with most teams, not many starters are playing as teams are trying to decide who can make the team as backups. The Falcons will host the New York Jets Thursday night. 

College football isn’t far away with the Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes opening up the season August 24. Georgia will begin their season the following week when they travel to Nashville to play Vanderbilt 

At the Northern Trust Championship, Patrick Reed fell two shots behind, then rallied back to take a one-shot win over Abraham Ancer. The win was Reed’s first in eighteen months since claiming the 2018 Masters. 

Kevin Harvick edged out Denny Hamlin at the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the Michigan International Speedway. The win was Harvick’s second of the year.
