The Charlton County basketball teams stayed unbeaten, after both the Maidens and Indians picked up wins over Hilliard last Tuesday. Both teams will be at Echols County on Tuesday, before hosting McIntosh County Academy on Saturday.

Former Indian, Teon Burroughs, was named to the First Team Mid-South Conference as a defensive lineman to conclude his collegiate career.

Michael Elliott and his West Georgia University teammates saw their season come to a close after falling to Valdosta State in the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs.  

The top ranked Georgia Bulldogs completed their undefeated regular season last Saturday, with a 45-0 win over state rival Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs look to remain unbeaten this Saturday, when they play Alabama in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.

There were several shakeups among the top teams as second ranked Ohio State lost to fifth ranked Michigan. Tenth ranked Oklahoma was eliminated from playoff contention after falling to rival and seventh ranked Oklahoma State. Alabama dodged joining this group after coming from behind and defeating rival Auburn in four overtimes.

Florida salvaged their season by beating Florida State to become bowl eligible at 6-6. Then on Sunday, the gators announced that they had hired Billy Napier to be their next head coach. Napier comes from the University of Louisiana. Napier has a 39-12 overall record with the Ragin' Cajuns.

In other coaching news it was announced Sunday, that Oklahoma coach, Lincoln Riley, was leaving to take the head coaching position at the University of Southern California.

In the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons picked up their fifth win of the year after defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars 21-14. With the loss, the Jaguars continue to struggle with a 2-9 record.

In college basketball top ranked Gonzaga was knocked off by fifth ranked Duke, but they would pick up a win against second ranked UCLA. Fourth ranked Kansas also found themselves on the losing end, as they dropped a game to Dayton on a buzzer beater. Meanwhile, third ranked Purdue, Duke and sixth ranked Baylor all remained unbeaten.

In women's hoops South Carolina remains the top team, while second ranked Maryland dropped back to back games to North Carolina State and Stanford. Connecticut stays at number three with their only loss coming at the hands of South Carolina.

The Atlanta Hawks ran their winning streak to seven games before losing to the New York Knicks. They are now over the .500 mark with an 11-10 record.
