Congratulations to the Charlton County Maidens softball team for advancing to the second round of the GHSA state playoffs. The Maidens swept Wheeler County last Wednesday and will be on the road again this week when they face region rival Lanier County.

The Bethune Braves turned a close game at the half against St. Marys Middle School into a 34-8 win last week to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Indian football squad returns from their bye week as they head to Rochelle to face Wilcox County this Friday night.

Courtney Williams and the Connecticut Sun fought valiantly, but came up just short, losing in the fifth and deciding game to the Washington Mystics in the WNBA Finals. 

Williams represented herself well averaging over 17 points a game in the series.

Raykwon Anderson saw some action for Appalachian State last Wednesday in a televised matchup against Louisiana. Anderson ran the ball three times for 30 yards in the Mountaineers’, 17-7, win.

The Georgia Bulldogs couldn't overcome four turnovers and were upset by South Carolina, 20-17, in double overtime. Usually reliable kicker, Rodrigo Blankenship, missed a field goal in the second overtime that would have extended the game.

The Florida Gators went tooth and nail with LSU in Baton Rouge, but it wouldn't be enough as LSU came away with a 42-28 win to give the Gators their first loss of the season.

Georgia and Florida were the only members of the top ten to suffer defeat with top-ranked Alabama cruising past Texas A&M while Clemson had no problems with Florida State.

The Atlanta Braves saw their season come to an abrupt close in the fifth and deciding game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals scored a record ten runs in the first inning and never looked back as they advanced to the National League Championship Series. The Washington Nationals pulled an upset of their own eliminating the Los Angeles Dodgers in five game to send home the team with the league's best regular season record.

The Nationals have gone on to win the first two game against the Cardinals in the best of seven series.

In the American League, the New York Yankees swept past the Minnesota Twins while it took the Houston Astros five game to eliminate the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees won the first game of the American League Championship Series.

The Jacksonville Jaguars got a great defensive effort against the New Orleans Saints, but couldn't get into the end zone themselves as they lost, 13-6, to fall to 2-4 on the season

The Atlanta Falcons scored a touchdown with just under two minutes remaining, but then missed the extra point and fell to the Arizona Cardinals, 34-33. With the loss the Falcons drop to 1-5 on the season.   

The NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Talladega was postponed until Monday due to bad weather conditions.
