The Charlton County Maidens softball team is on the verge of clinching a playoff spot after defeating Turner County, Clinch County, and Irwin County last week. The Maidens are just one game behind Lanier County for the top spot in the region and will play them Thursday in Lakeland.
The Indian football team saw their record evened at 2-2 when Tiftarea Academy kicked a field goal on the last play of the game to defeat the Indians 24-21 last Friday night. The Tribe opens region play this Friday in Homerville against Clinch County.
Several NFL games were postponed this week due to players contracting COVID-19. The Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers game has been rescheduled for Week 7 of the season. Meanwhile the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs game was moved to Monday night after New England quarterback Cam Newton tested positive.
Unfortunately for the Jacksonville Jaguars, they lost their third game in a row when they fell to the previously winless Cincinnati Bengals 33-25. The Jaguars led 13-10 at the half, but were outscored 23-12 in the second half.
The fourth ranked Georgia Bulldogs dominated seventh ranked Auburn in Athens last Saturday night. Stetson Bennett passed for 240 yards and one touchdown while the running games of the Dawgs punished Auburn for 202 yards and two more scores as Georgia cruised to a 27-6 win.
Meanwhile the top three teams also had no problems picking up wins as Clemson beat Virginia, Alabama beat Texas A&M, and Florida knocked off South Carolina.
But it wasn't all fun and games for all ranked teams. In addition to Auburn losing, ninth ranked Texas fell to TCU, and eleventh ranked Central Florida fell to Tulsa.
In two of the week's biggest shockers Arkansas knocked off Mississippi State and Oklahoma lost their second straight to open the season losing to Iowa State. Arkansas had lost 20 consecutive conference games, while Mississippi State had knocked off defending champion LSU last week.
The Atlanta Braves swept the best of three wildcard series against the Cincinnati Reds and will now face the Miami Marlins in the Divisional Series that began on Tuesday. The neutral site best of five series is taking place in Houston. The other half of the National League's Division Series has the Los Angeles Dodgers facing the San Diego Padres in Arlington, Texas.
In the American League the Tampa Bay Rays are facing the New York Yankees in San Diego, while the Oakland A's are facing the Houston Astros in Los Angeles.
Another baseball Hall of Famer passed away last week. Bob Gibson, a dominating pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals was suffering from pancreatic cancer. He was the World Series MVP in both 1964 and 1967 and won 251 games in his career.
The Los Angeles Lakers won the first two games of the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat but the Heat rebounded back on Sunday to win the third game of the best of seven series.
In the NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Talladega, Denny Hamlin beat Matt DiBenedetto in a photo finish in the third overtime period. The win was Hamlin's 44th career win.
