The Maiden softball team ran their record to 12-6 on the season after splitting a pair of games last week. The Maidens fell to Wilcox County before rallying back to knock off Clinch County. The Maidens will be back on the road Tuesday at Turner County before hosting Telfair County on Thursday.
The Maidens are hoping to improve their power ratings in the final weeks of the season. Currently they are ranked 21st and the top 24 qualify for the state playoffs.
The Indian football team fell to 1-3 on the season after dropping a tough 21-20 decision to Atkinson County. The Tribe heads to Turner County this Friday.
Courtney Williams and the Connecticut Sun swept the Los Angeles Sparks in three-straight games to reach the WNBA Finals. Williams played great in the three games, scoring 57 points and grabbing 25 rebounds, while dishing out 15 assists. The Sun will play the winner of the Washington Mystics and Las Vegas Aces series beginning on Sunday.
The third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs rallied from a 10-7 halftime deficit to overcome seventh-ranked Notre Dame at home and pull out a 23-17 win in front of a raucous Sanford Stadium crowd. Georgia takes this week off before taking on Tennessee.
Speaking of Tennessee, the Florida Gators had no problem disposing of them, 34-3, in the starting debut of quarterback Kyle Trask.
While the top of the rankings saw no upsets, there were several ranked teams other than Notre Dame to go down. Tenth-ranked Utah fell to Southern Cal, while 11th-ranked Michigan was manhandled by 13th-ranked Wisconsin. Fifteenth-ranked Central Florida lost their first regular season game in over a year when Pittsburgh edged them, 35-34. Also Texas A&M, Washington State, Arizona State and TCU lost as top 25 teams.
The Atlanta Braves clinched the National League East last Friday night with a win over the San Francisco Giants with a week to go in the regular season. The Braves can give some players a rest while others can concentrate on personal records. Outfield Ronald Acuna is looking to become just the fourth player to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases. He has 41 home runs and needs just three stolen bases. The Braves are also looking to become one of just three teams to have three players with 40 or more home runs. Freddie Freeman is two short, while Josh Donaldson is three short.
With the Yankees and Astros clinching their divisions in the American League, the only race remaining is between the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians in the Central Division. The Twins hold a four-game advantage with just seven games to play.
The Indians are also just a game back for the final wild card spot as they trail the Oakland A’s and Tampa Bay Rays.
There is one division race left up for grabs in the National League as well. The St. Louis Cardinals lead the Milwaukee Brewers by three games while the wildcard spots are currently held by the Washington Nationals and the Brewers. The Chicago Cubs are three games back.
The Jacksonville Jaguars won their first game of the year in a Thursday night prime time game against the Tennessee Titans. Chris Milton was inactive for the Titans. Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew tossed two touchdown passes and the Jaguars defense recorded nine sacks in the 20-7 win.
The Atlanta Falcons fell behind the Indianapolis Colts, 20-3, at the half and a second half rally fell short as they fell to 1-2 on the season after the 27-24 loss.
Martin Truex, Jr. won for the second straight week in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. He passed Kyle Busch with 25 laps remaining to pick up the win at the Richmond Speedway. Truex has clinched a spot in the second stage of the playoffs with his win and Busch and Kevin Harvick have ensured their places as well.
