Also congratulations go out to Charlton County wrestlers Thomas Johnson and Asad Akbar for qualifying for the State wrestling tournament this weekend in Macon.

The Charlton County baseball team rallied back in their final at-bat to defeat Ware County, 13-11, in a preseason scrimmage in Waycross last Tuesday.

The Charlton County basketball teams saw their seasons come to close last week after falling in the opening round of the Region 2-A Tournament. The Maidens finished the season with a 9-17 record, while the Indians ended up at 11-15 and two places out of a state playoff berth.

Trevor Knowles has begun his collegiate baseball career at Gordon College and picked up his first hit last Saturday. Knowles is sharing time at catcher so far this season.

Jack Gowen and the Georgia Bulldogs open up their season this weekend when they host the University of Richmond in a three-game series.

Also hoping to make their collegiate debuts this weekend will be freshmen Savannah Pollock and Lauran Allbritton as Wesleyan softball takes on Belhaven in a doubleheader on Saturday.

It won't be long before L.J. Talley reports to Blue Jays spring training in Dunedin, Florida. His minor league destination will be determined by his spring training performance. 

In college hoops, seventh-ranked Duke rallied from a 13-point deficit in the final four minutes of regulation to force overtime and then won on a put-back shot at the buzzer to stun North Carolina. 

After a topsy-turvy season in the polls, the teams at the top have seemed to stabilize as the top nine teams all won last week. The top five remains Baylor, Gonzaga, Kansas, San Diego State, and Louisville.

In the women's game, South Carolina remains on top of the polls, followed by Baylor and Oregon. Fourth-ranked Connecticut was beaten by Oregon, 74-56, at home and suffered their worst loss ever at Gampel Pavillion, which opened in 1990.

In the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks remain the class of the league up to this point, as they own a 45-7 record, while the Los Angeles Lakers are next at 39-12. 

All Star Weekend begins this Friday with the World vs. the USA Game and followed by the Three-Point and Slam Dunk Contests on Saturday before the All Star Game on Sunday. 

With college and NFL seasons over, die hard football fans have a new spring league to keep them entertained as the XFL got underway last weekend with four games.

At the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, Nick Taylor led from wire-to-wire and went on to claim a four-stroke win over Kevin Streelman. The win was his second career PGA win and his first in five years.

NASCAR season gets started again this weekend as the Daytona 500 opens up the 2020 schedule. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. will be on the pole to begin the race.
