The 2019 versions of the Charlton County Indians and Bethune Braves football teams were in action last week during spring scrimmages. While the scoreboard s didn’t show victories both teams showed progress made as new offensive and defensive schemes are learned.
Congratulations to Indian baseball player Trevor Knowles for being named by the Georgia Dugout Club to represent the Southeast Georgia team. They will play against three other Georgia teams from different parts of the state on May 31-June 1 at Mercer University.
The girls’ golf team was in action in Hawkinsville on Monday and Tuesday for the state golf tournament.
The Indians baseball team will be holding their annual baseball camp on June 4-6 for the first session and on June 11- 13 for session two. Cost is $75 for one session or $125 for both. Contact Coach Marchman at the high school for more details.
The Georgia Bulldog baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a three-game sweep of Alabama to improve their record to 42-14.
Folkston’s L.J. Talley had a big series as he batted .545 and ended the regular season leading the Dawgs in batting with a .346 average. He also led the team in hits, walks, and on-base percentage. Georgia received a first-round bye in the SEC Tournament and will open play on Wednesday against the Florida/ Texas A&M winner.
Courtney Williams and her Connecticut Sun teammates won two of their three preseason games last week. Williams started all three games and scored 24 points as the Sun prepare to open the regular season on Saturday against the Washington Mystics.
Chris Milton will be hosting his third annual “A Day of Play” on the old track behind the football stadium on June 15. This event is free to the public so make plans to attend.
The Atlanta Braves had a good week taking two of three games from both the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers. Freddie Freeman blasted homers in four straight games to end the weekend and rookie Austin Riley batted .421 with two home runs in his first five major league games. The Braves remain two games behind the Phillies with a 25-22 record.
In the NBA playoffs, the Golden State Warriors opened up a three-games-to-none lead over the Portland Trailblazers in the Western Conference Finals. The Warriors are almost certain to make the Finals once again as no team has ever come back from down three games.
In the Eastern Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks are looking to make their way back to the Finals for the first time since 1974 as they also have a two-games-to-one lead over the Toronto Raptors, who are looking to make their first ever Finals.
The Jacksonville Sharks routed their rivals, the Orlando Predators, 61-7, last Saturday night in Jacksonville to improve to 4-1 on the season and tied for first place in the National Arena League.
Brooks Koepka opened up a commanding seven-stroke lead after three rounds at the PGA Championship and then struggled in the final round before finally ending up with a two-stroke win over Dustin Johnson.
At the NASCAR All Star race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Kyle Larson won for the first time since 2017 as he held off Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch for the win.
