The Charlton County basketball teams played some inspired ball last week. While the two teams only managed one win each during the week, they played close games with great crowds. So if you haven't seen them in action, they'll be at home on Tuesday and Friday, against Wilcox County and Turner County before hitting the road Saturday to play Brantley County.

The Bethune Middle School teams return to the court this week when they travel to play St. Marys Middle School on Wednesday before hosting Camden Middle School on Thursday.

Baseball season is not too far away as the Indians will begin practice in a few weeks and have a scrimmage with Ware County on February 8 in Waycross.

The national championship game for college football takes place on January 13 with LSU and Clemson battling it out in New Orleans.

Georgia defeated Baylor, 26-14, in the Cotton Bowl to finish the season at 12-2 on the year. With running back D'Andre Swift declaring for the NFL Draft, the next big decision will be if quarterback Jake Fromm returns for his senior season.

Florida also wrapped up a successful season with a bowl win. The Gators knocked off Virginia, 36-28, in the Orange Bowl to finish off the season at 11-2.

The NFL playoffs got underway last weekend with the Houston Texans rallying from a 16-0 deficit to beat the Buffalo Bills, 22-19, in overtime in AFC action. 

In the other wildcard game, the Tennessee Titans knocked off the New England Patriots, 20-13, and possibly put an end to the career of quarterback Tom Brady. The Texans will move on to play the Kansas City Chiefs while the Titans take on the Baltimore Ravens.

In the NFC, the Minnesota Vikings went on the road to knock off Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints, 26-20, in overtime. They'll move on to play the San Francisco 49ers. In the other game, the Seattle Seahawks beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 17-9, and will advance to play the Green Bay Packers.

Top-ranked Gonzaga avoided the jinx of being number one in college hoops, but that didn't mean other upsets weren't in order for the top ten. 

Fourth-ranked Oregon fell to Colorado while fifth-ranked Ohio State lost their second-straight game after losing to Wisconsin. Seventh-ranked Louisville also lost their second game in a row after falling to Florida State. Ninth-ranked Memphis fell to Georgia and tenth-ranked Villanova lost to Marquette.

In the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks continue to hold the best record in the league at 32-5, while the Los Angeles Lakers lead the Western Conference with a 28-7 record. The only other team with single digit losses is the Boston Celtics at 25-8. Meanwhile on the other end of the spectrum, the Atlanta Hawks have the worst record at 8-28.
