School is almost back in session and that means that Indians and Braves Football ,as well as, Maiden Softball, are right around the corner.
The Maiden softball team will actually get started before school starts, as they travel to Brunswick on Saturday, to open up their 2019 campaign. They will have their home opener on Tuesday against Irwin County.
The Indian football team wrapped up their first week of practice and are practicing hard with the upcoming Soap Game on Thursday, August 8 and a scrimmage at Pierce County on August 16 on the horizon.
The Bethune Braves football team travelled to Tifton last week for a passing tournament and came away with three wins and just one loss against much larger schools. The Braves defeated Worth County, as well as Thomas County Central’s seventh grade and eighth grade squads, before losing to Valdosta.
The Connecticut Sun defeated the New York Liberty, 70-63, last week for their fourth win in a row before taking off for the All Star break. Charlton’s own Courtney Williams scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win.
Chris Milton has begun his fourth training camp as a member of the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts will open up their preseason schedule on August 8 when they face the Buffalo Bills.
The Atlanta Braves dropped two games to the Kansas City Royals in inter-league play before winning two of three games from the Philadelphia Phillies. However, the Braves lost outfielder Nick Markakis to a broken wrist after being hit by a pitch in Friday’s game.
The Jacksonville Sharks wrapped up the regular season in first place with a 13-1 record after blasting the Orlando Predators, 85-30, in the season finale. The Sharks led 50-30 at the half and kept the pressure on throughout the second half. They now prepare for the National Arena League playoffs, in which they will host the Columbus Lions on Tuesday, August 8. The winner will play for the championship of the league against the winner of the Carolina Cobras and Massachusetts Pirates contest.
Brooks Koepka overcame a one stroke deficit entering the final round and pulled away to win the St. Jude’s Classic in Memphis by three strokes over Webb Simpson.
At the NASCAR Cup Series race at the Pocono Speedway, Denny Hamlin pulled away on the final restart of overtime to beat Erik Jones and Martin Truex, Jr. The win was the third of the season for Hamlin.
