The Maiden softball team split four games last week. They defeated Irwin County before falling to Greenbrier and Effingham County and then finishing off the week with a win over Grovetown. The Maidens are now 10-4 on the season and 7-1 in Region 2-A.
The size and physicality of the Appling County Pirates was too much for the Indian football team to overcome last Friday as the Tribe fell by a 40-20 score. They have a bye week this week before beginning region play in Atkinson County next Friday.
Courtney Williams was named the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week after her performance the previous week. The Connecticut Sun have clinched the second seed and will receive a double bye in the playoffs. Last week the Sun defeated the Dallas Wings, lost to the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever to end the regular season. Williams continued her hot play scoring 42 points in the three games including twenty-five in the game against Chicago.
While Chris Milton's time with the Indianapolis Colts came to an end last week he was only off the market for one day after the Tennessee Titans claimed him off of waivers. Milton and his Titans teammates defeated the Cleveland Browns 43-13 in their season opener on Sunday.
Terrible news for former Indian Teon Burroughs as he tore his bicep tendon in the season opener and will be out for the remainder of the season.
The third ranked Georgia Bulldogs started off slow against Murray State on Saturday, but then reeled off thirty-five unanswered second quarter points on the way to a 63-17 win. Georgia will host Arkansas State this weekend in their final tune-up before facing Notre Dame in two weeks.
Once again the top ten of college football mainly came out of the weekend unscathed. The only team to lose was ninth ranked Texas falling to sixth ranked LSU. However it took overtime for seventh ranked Michigan to put away a pesky Army squad. Florida had no problems in shutting down Tennessee-Martin 45-0 while the Seminoles of Florida State continue to struggle as it took a missed extra point in overtime to allow them to beat Louisiana-Monroe 45-44. But things are even worse in Tennessee as the Vols gave up a long pass play in the final seconds setting up a tying field goal by BYU. Then the Cougars would win in double overtime sending Tennessee to a 0-2 start for the first time since 1988.
The Atlanta Braves ran their winning streak to nine games before losing to the Washington Nationals on Sunday. The Braves won three of four games against the Nationals to improve their lead in the National League East to nine games. With just eighteen games remaining any combination of eleven Braves wins or Nationals losses will clinch the division.
The Jacksonville Jaguars lost new quarterback Nick Foles to a shoulder injury in the first quarter of the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. Rookie backup Gardner Minshew came in and played well in relief throwing two touchdown passes, but the Chiefs offense was too much as they defeated the Jaguars 40-26.
The Atlanta Falcons turned the ball over three times and could only get into the end zone twice as they dropped their opener 28-12 to the Minnesota Vikings.
Bianca Andrescu, a nineteen year-old Canadian defeated Serena Williams in straight sets in the finals of the U.S. Open for her fist Grand Slam title. The loss by Williams denied her once again in her quest for tying the record of twenty-four major titles.
On the men's side Rafael Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev in a classic five set match that lasted almost five hours. The win was Nadal's nineteenth career major title.
At the NASCAR Cup race at the Brickyard in Indianapolis Kevin Harvick won the final race before the playoffs start. The win was the 48th of Harvick's career.
