Congratulations to former Indian baseball star L.J. Talley for being drafted in the s e v e n t h round of the Major L e a g u e Baseball Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. Talley will be assigned to a minor league team soon to begin his professional career. 

District tournaments begin this week for the All Star teams of the Charlton County Recreation Department. The boys teams will play in Hazlehurst, while the girls softball team will be in Alma. 

Courtney Williams scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds last Thursday to help the Connecticut Sun defeat the Los Angeles Sparks. Then on Sunday, Williams followed that up with a 13-point, seven-rebound effort in a win against the Atlanta Dream. The Sun currently own the best record in the WNBA at 5-1. 

Chris Milton will be hosting his third annual “A Day of Play” on the old track behind the football stadium Saturday, June 15. There will be games and activities for the kids as well as a free lunch and giveaways. This event is free to the public, so make plans to attend. 

In the NBA Finals, the Toronto Raptors are on the verge of dethroning the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors. The Raptors lead the series three games to one, while the fifth game of the NBA Finals was scheduled for Monday night in Toronto. 

At the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, UCLA knocked off top-seeded Oklahoma in two straight games. The Bruins mauled the Sooners, 16-3, in the opener of the best-of-three championship series before getting a walk-off 5-4 win to claim their first title since 2010. 

Louisville, Texas Tech, Michigan, Mississippi State, Florida State, and Vanderbilt claimed spots in the College World Series with two spots still available through Sunday night. Arkansas and Ole Miss were battling for one spot, while Auburn and North Carolina were playing for the final slot. 

The highlight of the Super Regionals was Vanderbilt freshman pitcher Kumar Rocker pitching a no-hitter and striking out 19 batters in their win over Duke. 

The Atlanta Braves won four of six games over the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins to run their record to 36- 29 on the season. 

Meanwhile, potential help is on the way for the Braves pitching staff. Former American league Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel was signed as a free agent and will make a few starts in the minors before getting called up. 

The Jacksonville Sharks improved to 6-1 on the season after beating the Columbus Lions, 47-41, Saturday night in Jacksonville. The first place Sharks have a six-game winning streak and will be on the road against the second place Carolina Cobras this Saturday night in Greensboro. 

At the Canadian Open, Rory McIlroy entered the final round tied with two others, then proceeded to run away from the field to beat out runner-up Shane Lowry by seven strokes. 

Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at the Michigan Speedway was postponed until Monday due to rain. 

Rafael Nadal defeated Dominic Thiem in four sets to claim his 12th French Open title. On the women’s side, Ashleigh Barty won her first Grand Slam title after beating Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets. 

Barty becomes the first Australian woman to win at Roland-Garros since 1973.
