The Charlton County boys basketball team made a long trek to Thomson for a preseason scrimmage against Thomson High School. The Tribe lost a tough decision, but will begin the regular season this Friday night when they travel to Echols County, along with the Maidens squad. On Saturday they will head to Telfair County for another Region 2-A matchup.

Bethune Middle School also starts its season this week. On Thursday, the Braves and Maidens will be on the road against Yulee Middle School.

Courtney Williams had an off-week playing in Turkey, while Chris Milton's Tennessee Titans were also on a bye-week.

Raykwon Anderson had 48 yards rushing and scored a touchdown as Appalachian State knocked off Georgia State, 56-27, in Atlanta.

The fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-0 lead over Auburn, and then had to hang on at the end to claim a 21-14 win. With the win, the Dawgs captured the SEC East title and earned a spot in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.

The tenth-ranked Florida Gators cruised to a 23-6 win over Missouri to run their record to 9-2 on the season.

Two of the last five remaining undefeated teams fell on Saturday. Minnesota, fresh off of a big win last week over Penn State, lost to Iowa, 23-19. Meanwhile, Baylor blew a 28-3 lead against Oklahoma as the Sooners rallied for a 34-31 win.

Valdosta State completed their second-straight undefeated regular season on Saturday as they beat West Georgia, 42-14, to clinch the Gulf South Conference championship. They will now open up the NCAA Division II playoffs in two weeks, after getting a first-round bye. The Blazers will play the winner of Wingate and West Florida.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had quarterback Nick Foles return to the starting lineup, but it wouldn't be enough as the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Jaguars, 33-13. Jacksonville falls to 4-6 on the season.

The Atlanta Falcons won their second-straight game as they totally dominated the Carolina Panthers, 29-3, to improve to 3-7 on the season.

Major League Baseball handed out their postseason awards last week. Pete Alonso, of the New York Mets, and Yordan Alvarez, of the Houston Astros, claimed the Rookie of the Year Awards. Winners of the Cy Young Award went to members of the same teams with Jacob deGrom and Justin Verlander claiming the awards for the best pitcher in each league. The city of Los Angeles had both winners for the Most Valuable Player Award. Cody Bellinger, of the Dodgers, and Mike Trout, of the Angels, took home that hardware.

Being the top-ranked team in college basketball has been a curse so far. One week after beating former number one Michigan State to move into the top spot, the Kentucky Wildcats were upset by Evansville.

Kyle Busch dominated the championship race of the NASCAR Cup Series and won easily to claim his second career title at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Martin Truex, Jr. was a distant second in the race.
