Congratulations to former Charlton County Indian Champ Bailey for being elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame!

Congratulations  also go out to Tommy Layden, area wrestling champion along with William Hogg, Thomas Johnson, and Craig Carlisle for advancing to the State Sectional Tournament.

The Charlton County baseball team gets a chance to show off their talents when they host Ware County in a preseason scrimmage at Indian Field on Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

On the same day, the Bethune Middle School Braves will open their season on the road against Ware County Middle, while the Bethune Maiden softball season resumes play Friday against St. Marys Middle School.

Signing day is Wednesday for high school seniors who will sign letters of intent to play college football. Charlton County is expected to have a few sign on the dotted line to continue their playing careers at the collegiate level.

The Charlton County Recreation Department will hold their final Saturday of play at the recreation gym on Saturday. All star teams will then be selected to represent the county at the GRPA District Tournament. 

In addition to Bailey being elected for the Hall of Fame, Tony Gonzalez, Ed Reed, Ty Law, and Kevin Mawae were all chosen. 

Former Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and former scouting director of the Dallas Cowboys Gil Brandt were also chosen. Defensive back Johnny Robinson was chosen by the Senior committee.

In this year’s Super Bowl played in Atlanta, the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots battled in a defensive slugfest. The game was tied at 3-3 after three quarters of play before the Patriots’ Sony Michel scored with about seven minutes to play. The Patriots add a late field to claim the 13-3 win.

In college hoops, the top four teams, Tennessee, Duke, Virginia, and Gonzaga should maintain their rankings, but fifth-ranked Michigan fell at the hands of Iowa and eighth-ranked Michigan State lost their second straight game after losing to Indiana.

In women’s basketball, top-ranked should remain on top, but second-ranked Connecticut dropped their second game of the year after losing to third-ranked Louisville.

It won’t be long before pitchers and catchers report to spring training. The Atlanta Braves report on February 16, while position players will be there on February 21.

On the PGA Tour, Ricky Fowler entered the final day with a four-stroke lead, but managed to hold off Branden Grace to win the Phoenix Open by two strokes.
